Chapter 8 - The War at the Rail Yard

At ten o'clock that night, the rain returned, casting a thick, misty shroud over the abandoned industrial rail yard on the outskirts of the mountain valley.
Forty of Antonio Moretti’s men were gathered inside a massive, rusted train hangar, loading heavy automatic weapons, RPGs, and breaching charges into armored trucks, preparing for their midnight raid on Blackwood Ridge.
Antonio Moretti himself—a thick-set man with a scarred face and cold, ruthless eyes—stood near a map table, barking orders into a radio.
"I want the girl and the boys taken alive!" Moretti yelled over the sound of the wind rattling the corrugated iron roof. "I want Victor Thorne on his knees before I execute him! We take his city tonight!"
Suddenly, the heavy iron power grid of the rail yard cut out.
The entire facility was plunged into pitch-black darkness.
"What the hell?!" Moretti shouted, drawing his sidearm. "Get the backup generators on!"
Before his men could react, three flashbang grenades burst through the high skylights of the hangar, exploding with deafening, blinding force.
CRASH! BANG! BANG!
"Thorne!" a voice screamed through the blinding smoke. "It's an ambush!"
From the dark shadows of the hangar perimeter, my strike team moved in like wraiths.
I stepped through the shattered side entrance, dressed in a black tactical assault rig, holding a suppressed assault rifle. I moved with terrifying, fluid precision, taking down three Moretti enforcers before they could even shoulder their weapons.
Phut-phut-phut.
The hangar turned into a chaotic arena of suppressed fire, flashing muzzle bursts, and shouting men. My men, trained in close-quarters urban warfare, systematically cut through Moretti’s forces, driving them back against the rusted train cars.
Antonio Moretti panicked. He scrambled toward a heavy armored SUV parked inside the hangar, trying to reach the door.
I vaulted over a wooden crate, dropping two of his personal bodyguards with precise sidearm shots, and landed directly in front of Moretti’s vehicle, blocking his path.
Moretti froze, raising his silver revolver with shaking hands. "Thorne!"
I didn't give him the chance to pull the trigger. I lunged forward, grabbing his wrist, driving my knee violently into his ribs. Moretti let out a agonizing gasp as his revolver clattered onto the concrete floor.
I grabbed him by the throat, slamming his heavy body against the side of his armored truck, pressing the cold steel of my pistol directly under his jaw.
"You brought a war to my family, Antonio," I growled, my voice vibrating with absolute, lethal rage.
"Wait! Wait, Victor!" Moretti gagged out, his eyes wide with blinding terror. "It was your mother! Eleanor offered me half the city! She gave me the coordinates! She said you were weak because of the girl!"
"My mother is facing her own reckoning," I whispered cold, unyielding. "And yours ends right now."

I did not hesitate. A single suppressed round echoed softly inside the vast iron hangar.
The war for the city was over.
