Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Tower

The board room on the 40th floor of Reed Enterprises was surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass, offering a sweeping view of the city skyline below.
It was 8:00 AM on Monday morning.
Richard Cole, my polished, fifty-year-old CFO, sat at the head of the oak conference table, going through a stack of quarterly financial reports with three senior managers. He looked every bit the corporate elite—tailored Italian suit, slicked-back hair, and a million-dollar smile that had convinced investors to pour fortunes into my company.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom burst open with a loud thud.
I walked in, flanked by Frank and two uniformed officers from the city police department.
Richard stopped mid-sentence, setting his gold fountain pen down on the mahogany surface, an easy, polite smile spreading across his face. "Nathan? What’s the meaning of this? We have the quarterly audit in thirty minutes—"
I walked straight up to him, grabbed the lapels of his expensive suit, and yanked him out of his leather chair, slamming him against the glass wall overlooking the city.
The executive officers in the room gasped, scrambling out of their seats in absolute shock.
"Nathan! Have you lost your mind?!" Richard choked out, his eyes wide with surprise.
"1420 Mercer Street, Apartment 4B," I hissed into his face, my voice trembling with a quiet, lethal rage. "How much did Marcus Vance pay you to use my company's legal seal to forge an eviction notice against a dying woman?"
The color drained from Richard’s face so fast he looked like a corpse. His arrogant smile dissolved, replaced by a twitching, terrified panic.
"Nathan... listen to me... it was just a property dispute..." Richard stammered. "Vance promised our development branch first rights to the Mercer Street block if we cleared out the long-term tenants! I didn't know—"
"You forged my signature," I said, my voice dropping into an icy whisper that sent a shiver through the room. "You sent my enforcement team to terrorize a seven-year-old girl who was sewing shirts with blood on her fingers just to pay forty dollars toward a fake debt."
I shoved him back into the arms of the two police officers waiting behind me.
"Richard Cole, you are terminated," I declared, pulling a thick blue folder from Frank’s hands and tossing it onto the table. "And those officers are arresting you for corporate fraud, forgery, and criminal conspiracy to endanger a minor."
May you like
As the officers snapped steel handcuffs around Richard’s wrists and dragged him out of the boardroom past dozens of staring employees, I stood alone against the high glass wall, looking out at the city I had spent decades conquering.
I had built an empire, but I had allowed monsters to nest in its shadow. That ended today.
