Chapter 7 - The Cornered Beast

Marcus Vance’s eyes narrowed, a flash of ugly venom bleeding through his polite facade.

"Nathan Reed... the real estate mogul," Marcus sneered, letting out a short, mocking laugh. "I know who you are. But you have no legal standing here, Reed. I am David’s brother. I am this child’s blood uncle. A judge will grant me guardianship over a sick, bankrupt mother any day of the week!"

"You mean the judge who just issued a warrant for your arrest?" I asked calmly, taking my phone from my pocket and tapping the screen.

Marcus froze. "What?"

The door to the ICU suite swung open once more.

Frank walked in, accompanied by Detective Miller from the city’s Financial Crimes Division and two uniformed sheriff’s deputies.

"Marcus Vance," Detective Miller said, pulling an official red-sealed document from his jacket. "We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of grand larceny, insurance fraud, forgery, and reckless endangerment of a minor."

Marcus stumbled back a step, his face turning pale. "This is absurd! On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds that Richard Cole just spent three hours in an interrogation room laying out every text message, bank transfer, and forged document you used to withhold David Vance's life insurance payout from his widow," Detective Miller declared. "Including the payments you made to ensure her eviction notice was processed while she was critically ill."

Marcus looked frantically around the room, realization dawning on him that his elaborate, greedy scheme had completely collapsed. His eyes darted toward the window, then toward the door, but the two deputies stepped forward, blocking his path.

"You can't do this!" Marcus roared, his voice cracking as the deputies grabbed his arms, forcing him around and pulling his hands behind his back. "I’m her uncle! That money belongs to the Vance family!"

"That money belongs to Lily," I said, stepping up to him as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "And you are going to spend the next fifteen years in a state facility thinking about the seven-year-old child you forced to sew clothes to survive."

The deputies dragged Marcus Vance out of the hospital suite, his wild screams echoing down the corridor until the heavy glass doors closed behind him, restoring absolute peace to the room.

Sarah let out a long, shuddering sob, burying her face in her hands. Lily wrapped her small arms around her mother’s neck, kissing her cheek softly.

I walked over to the bed, reaching out to gently touch Lily’s shoulder.

"It’s over, Sarah," I whispered softly. "The monsters are gone."
