Chapter 6 - The Shadow at the Hospital

By Wednesday afternoon, Sarah’s condition had stabilized.

The heavy fever had broken, the fluid in her lungs had cleared under expert medical intervention, and for the first time in months, she was sitting up in her hospital bed, eating a bowl of warm broth.

Lily sat on the edge of the bed, holding her mother’s hand, giggling softly as Sarah stroked her brown hair.

I stepped into the room carrying a large bouquet of fresh yellow freesia—the same flowers Sarah used to pick from the wild fields near our old trailer park when we were kids.

Sarah’s eyes filled with soft tears when she saw them. "You remembered," she whispered.

"I buried a lot of things, Sarah," I said, setting the flowers on the bedside table and sitting down in the armchair beside her. "But I never forgot the girl who showed me kindness when the rest of the world offered nothing but cold concrete."

She reached out, touching my forearm gently. "Nathan... the doctors told me what you’ve done. The hospital bill, the specialists, the private room... I don't know how I can ever repay you."

"You don't repay family, Sarah," I said firmly. "And as far as I’m concerned, you and Lily are the only real family I have left."

Before she could answer, the glass door to the ICU suite clicked open.

A tall man in a dark grey trench coat walked into the room without knocking. He had sharp, greedy eyes, thin lips, and a slick, arrogant posture that instantly set my instincts on high alert.

Marcus Vance.

Lily shrank back against Sarah’s side instantly, her small body trembling as she recognized her uncle.

"Well, well," Marcus said, stepping toward the foot of the bed with an insincere, oily smile. "Look at you, Sarah. Miraculous recovery. I heard from the building manager that you had left the apartment, so I came to make sure my dear sister-in-law was... comfortable."

Sarah’s grip on Lily tightened, her face turning pale. "Marcus... what are you doing here?"

"I’m here as your family, Sarah," Marcus said, pulling a document from his coat pocket and laying it on the bedside table. "Since you’ve been so ill, I had my attorney draft papers appointing me as the temporary legal guardian of Lily and trustee of David’s estate. It’ll make things much easier for you while you recover."

He handed her a pen, his eyes gleaming with cold, predatory intent. "Just sign at the bottom."

I stood up slowly from my chair, stepping directly between Marcus Vance and the bed, blocking his view of Sarah and Lily completely.

"She’s not signing anything," I said, my voice dangerously low.

Marcus frowned, looking me up and down, noticing my expensive suit and immaculate presence. "And who the hell are you? This is a private family matter."

"My name is Nathan Reed," I said, stepping closer until I was inches from his face. "I own the building you tried to steal, I own the company whose seal you forged, and as of two hours ago, I am the chief legal benefactor protecting Sarah and Lily Vance."
