Chapter 3 - The Paper Labyrinth

By 2:00 AM, the conference room on the eighth floor of the Federal Building in downtown Chicago was strewn with financial ledgers, hard drives, and encrypted servers seized from Marlene’s private office.
I sat across from Agent Miller and a team of forensic accountants, sifting through thirty years of forged signatures, illegal transfers, and shell company deeds.
"It’s worse than we thought," Miller said, sliding a thick ledger across the glass table. "Marlene wasn't just stealing from your firm. She’s been using your family’s real estate holdings to collateralize loans for Vance’s international shipping routes. If Vance defaults on those loans tomorrow at noon, your entire family estate, including the house, will be seized by the international banking consortium."
"How much does he owe?" I asked, running a hand over my tired eyes.
"Four hundred million dollars," Miller replied flatly. "Marlene signed you as the personal guarantor three weeks ago using a forged power of attorney."
My phone buzzed on the table. An unknown encrypted number flashed on the screen.
I looked at Miller, who immediately signaled his tech team to begin tracing the call. I tapped the speaker button.
"David," a deep, rasping voice echoed through the speaker—a voice I hadn't heard since my father's funeral ten years ago. Victor Vance.
"Victor," I said, my voice hardening instantly.
"I hear your mother had a rather uncouth encounter with the authorities tonight," Vance said, the sound of ice clinking in a crystal glass audible in the background. "A shame. Marlene was always too dramatic for my taste. But let's cut to the point, David. You have the master encryption keys to the family trust's primary vault. I need those keys by eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
May you like
"You won't get a single dime, Vance," I spat. "The feds are seizing every asset connected to you."
"A predictable response," Vance chuckled softly—a dry, chilling sound. "Check your encrypted home security feed, David. I think you'll find my counter-offer quite compelling."
