CHAPTER 3 — THE COUNTERATTACK BEGINS

By the time I was discharged from the hospital, everything had changed.

Not in my life.

In his.

Adrian just didn’t know it yet.

My father’s legal team moved first.

Quietly.

Not aggressively.

Strategically.

They didn’t attack Adrian directly.

They attacked everything that supported him.

His financial advisors received audit notices.

His corporate partners received compliance inquiries.

His real estate holdings were flagged for review.

His “clean” reputation began accumulating friction it couldn’t explain.

And then—

the first crack appeared.

A luxury development project he was leading suddenly stalled.

A major investor withdrew.

No explanation given.

Just silence.

The kind of silence that means someone powerful has stopped protecting you.

Adrian called me that night.

I didn’t answer.

He called again.

And again.

Finally, a message:

“You’re making a mistake.”

I stared at the screen.

No.

I thought.

You already made it.

My father stood in the kitchen of my temporary apartment while I held my sons.

“He’s reacting,” I said.

My father nodded.

“Good,” he replied.

I frowned. “Why is that good?”

He looked at me.

“Because it means he still thinks this is a fight he understands.”

A pause.

“It isn’t.”

That was when I learned the second truth.

This wasn’t a divorce.

It was a dismantling.

By the third day, Adrian’s mistress disappeared from public visibility.

No social media.

No appearances.

No trace.

Almost like she had never existed.

I asked my mother about it.

“She was never the real threat,” she said.

“Just the mask.”

I didn’t sleep that night.

Because I realized something worse than betrayal.

Adrian hadn’t chosen another woman.

He had chosen a system that required one.

May you like

And now—

that system was collapsing around him.
