Chapter 6 - The Shadows Recede

Two weeks later.

A bright, warm late-autumn sun bathed the manicured lawns of Blackwood Sanctuary in golden light. The ocean below was calm, sparkling like millions of diamonds under a clear blue sky.

The heavy security personnel who had once guarded every entrance of the estate had been scaled back, replaced by a quiet, serene tranquility.

In the central courtyard, Mara stood near a circular wooden training ring, holding a long leather leash attached to a fresh, custom harness wrapped around Rook’s chest.

Rook was navigating a complex agility course Mara had constructed out of wooden ramps, low hurdles, and scented boundary markers.

"Step up, Rook," Mara commanded gently, tapping a wooden block with a leather cue stick. "Find the lavender."

Rook didn't hesitate. Guided by the subtle scent markers Mara had laid down, the massive Cane Corso stepped smoothly up the wooden ramp, traversed the elevated balance beam, and sat down precisely on the target mat at the end, letting out a happy, deep bark.

"Good boy!" Mara laughed joyfully, dropping to her knees and tossing him a piece of freeze-dried beef liver. "Perfect! Absolute ten out of ten!"

Rook happily munched on the treat, pushing his massive head into her lap, tail thumping enthusiastically against the grass.

Standing near the stone archway of the patio, holding two cups of fresh coffee, stood Dominic.

He wore a dark navy wool sweater and trousers, looking relaxed, younger, and remarkably rested. The dark circles that had hollowed his eyes for six years were gone, replaced by a quiet, steady strength.

He walked across the lawn, handing one coffee cup to Mara.

"Dr. Whitaker," Dominic smiled faintly. "You’ve turned my ferocious security beast into an Olympic athlete."

"He was always an athlete, Dominic," Mara said, taking the warm cup and taking a sip. "He just needed someone to build him a new map."

Dominic looked down at Rook, then turned his gaze onto Mara.

"The federal prosecutors formally filed charges against Julian Vance, Marcus Kane, and the remaining Lucchesi capos yesterday," Dominic informed her quietly. "Victor Vance signed a full confession in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. He will spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security facility in Colorado."

Mara released a long, soft breath. "And the threat to my sister?"

"Caleb withdrew the security details three days ago," Dominic said. "Though... your sister did tell Caleb that he’s welcome back at her pottery shop anytime. I believe she found his six-foot-four frame rather charming."

Mara burst into a genuine, bright laugh that made Rook tilt his head in curiosity. "Claire always had terrible taste in quiet, muscular men."

"Is that so?" Dominic raised an eyebrow, a warm, amused smile spreading across his handsome face. "That is good to know."

Mara looked up into his dark eyes, feeling a warm, electric pulse flutter in her chest. Over the past fortnight, living at Blackwood to oversee Rook's rehabilitation, she had seen the true man behind the terrifying reputation—a man of deep loyalty, quiet generosity, and profound capacity for love.

"What happens now, Dominic?" Mara asked softly, stepping slightly closer to him.

Dominic set his coffee cup down on a nearby stone table. He reached out, his long, strong fingers gently catching hers, holding her hand under the warm afternoon sun.

"Now," Dominic murmured, his voice dropping into a tender, intimate register, "I fulfill my promise to the Newburyport clinic. The five-year grant was processed this morning."

"And what about you?" Mara asked, searching his eyes.

"I’m asking if the clinic’s head specialist would consider taking a permanent consultant position here at Blackwood," Dominic whispered, pulling her hand slightly closer to his chest. "For the dog... and for his owner."

Mara looked at Rook, who had lay down in the grass between them, resting his head on Dominic’s boot with total, contented peace.

Then she looked up at Dominic.

"I think," Mara smiled softly, leaning up on her tiptoes to press a gentle, warm kiss against his cheek, "that can be arranged, Mr. Vale."
