Chapter 8 - The Legacy of Love

One year after the wedding.
A quiet, golden Sunday afternoon settled over Blackwood Sanctuary.
The smell of fresh lavender, roasted chicken, and sea salt drifted through the sunlit kitchen of the estate.
Mara sat at the long wooden island table, sipping a cup of herbal tea, reviewing the architectural blueprints for the Rook Foundation for Working Dogs—a new twenty-acre rehabilitation facility built in Newburyport, fully funded by the Vale family, dedicated to training and caring for injured service animals from across the nation.
The back porch doors opened softly.
Dominic walked into the kitchen, wearing a comfortable navy sweater and jeans. In his arms, he carried a small, four-month-old baby girl wrapped in a soft pink blanket.
"She’s awake," Dominic smiled warmly, stepping up to Mara and pressing a tender kiss against her forehead before showing her the baby’s cute, sleepy face.
"Good morning, sweet Elena," Mara cooed softly, reaching out to gently stroke her baby daughter's soft dark hair.
Little Elena let out a tiny, adorable coo, her bright hazel eyes looking up at her mother with innocent wonder.
"Where is her guardian?" Mara asked with a warm smile.
Dominic chuckled, pointing toward the open back porch door.
Lying on the warm cedar deck, basking in the afternoon sun, was Rook. Beside him sat a sleek, nine-month-old black Cane Corso puppy named Amber—a rescue puppy Mara had brought home three months prior to serve as Rook's companion and apprentice.
Amber was chewing on a thick rope toy, occasionally dropping it against Rook's nose to beg for attention.
Rook patiently rested his heavy paw over the puppy's back, letting out a soft, contented sigh as he listened to the sound of his family laughing inside the house.
Dominic set the baby gently into the wooden bassinet beside the table, then wrapped his arms around Mara from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder as they both looked out at the ocean view.
"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Vale?" Dominic murmured into her hair.
Mara lifted her head, resting her cheek against his, her heart filled with a peace she had sought her entire life.

"I’m thinking," Mara whispered, holding his warm hands over her waist, "that no matter how dark the room gets... if you follow the right heart, you will always find the light."
Dominic smiled, pressing his lips gently against hers under the golden sunlight—the final, perfect page of a story that was only just beginning.
