Chapter 4 - Shattered Glass

By mid-afternoon on Friday, the ICU had been turned into a virtual courtroom.

Because both girls were still in fragile condition, a temporary holding area was established in the hospital's private family suite. Two armed guards stood outside the door. Daniel sat in a corner, handcuffed to an armchair, while Rachel sat at Lily’s bedside, her eyes red and swollen.

Lucy, now fully conscious and resting in the adjoining room, had finally been told a portion of the truth. At fifteen, she was intelligent enough to know something was horribly wrong.

"Mom?" Lucy’s voice was weak, echoing through the open connecting door. "Why are there policemen outside?"

Rachel choked back a sob, looking at Daniel before burying her face in her hands.

Maya stepped into Lucy's room, pulling a chair beside her bed. "Lucy, my name is Dr. Bennett. You've been very sick, but the medicine we gave you is helping your body heal."

"Where is Lily?" Lucy asked, her pale green eyes wide with anxiety. "Is she okay? She collapsed on stage... I saw her on the news before I fell in the kitchen..."

"Lily is right next door. She’s resting," Maya said gently. "Lucy... I need to ask you something important. Have you ever wondered why you didn't go to public school like other kids? Why you always had to see doctors in different cities?"

Lucy looked down at her thin fingers, tracing the IV tape on her skin. "Dad said... he said people wanted to hurt our family. He said I had to be invisible so we could stay safe. Was he lying to me?"

"No," Daniel called out from the next room, his voice cracking with emotion. "I never lied about that, baby. I was trying to keep you safe from bad people. I swear to you!"

"Mr. Harper, please," a Child Protective Services worker named Eleanor Vance warned, stepping between the rooms. She turned to Maya. "Dr. Bennett, CPS is filing for immediate temporary custody of both minors. Given the extensive criminal deceit, forge of public records, and denial of proper medical care for over ten years, the parents are deemed unfit."

"Unfit?!" Rachel shrieked, springing from her chair. "We gave up our entire lives for them! We lived like fugitives in our own country so no one would take Lucy away or hurt her! How dare you call us unfit?!"

"You kept a child legally dead for fifteen years!" Eleanor responded sharply. "She has no legal identity, no official medical history, no state protection! If this disease hadn't brought them here, how far would you have gone? Would you have let her live as a ghost her entire life?"

Before Rachel could counter, the heart monitor on Lily’s bed gave a sharp warning beep.

"Mom... Dad..." Lily rasped, sitting up, her voice trembling with sheer panic. "Don't let them take us. Please... don't let them take us away!"

The distress was immediate. Lily’s heart rate spiked to dangerous levels, her newly stabilized system buckling under the surge of adrenaline.

"Everyone out! Now!" Maya barked, shoving the CPS worker toward the hallway. "Her cardiac wall is already inflamed from the Mason-Keller syndrome! Severe emotional trauma right now could trigger a fatal arrhythmia!"

As security escorted the arguing adults out into the corridor, Lucy pulled herself up in her bed, tears streaming down her face, staring through the glass at her little sister who was hyperventilating into an oxygen mask.

The family was saved from the disease, but they were being ripped apart by the very lies meant to protect them.
