Chapter 6 - Shadows from the Past

While the court battle raged, dark waters were churning outside the courtroom.
On Tuesday evening, Maya was finishing her rounds in the Pediatric ICU. The floor was quieter now, though a state security guard remained posted outside Room 302, where Lucy and Lily were now sharing a double room.
As Maya walked toward the elevator, a man in a tailored grey suit stepped out of the stairwell. He was in his late fifties, with cold grey eyes and a faint scar running along his jawline.
"Dr. Bennett?" the man asked, his voice smooth and devoid of warmth.
Maya stopped, her instincts immediately putting her on guard. "Yes? Visiting hours are over. Who are you?"
"My name is Julian Thorne," the man said, offering a crisp, professional business card. "I represent an investment firm interested in pharmaceutical logistics. I read about your extraordinary case in the medical journals over the weekend. The twin girls with Mason-Keller syndrome?"
Maya didn't take the card. "What do you want, Mr. Thorne?"
"I am simply curious," Thorne said, taking a step closer, his hands resting casually in his coat pockets. "The father... Daniel Harper. He claimed to the press and the federal courts that he was threatened by associates of his deceased brother, Marcus. He mentioned a name... Victor Vance's old network."
Maya felt her stomach drop. The name hadn't been released to the public or the press.
"How do you know that name?" Maya asked, pulling her phone from her pocket.
"Because Marcus Harper didn't just owe money to a cartel, Dr. Bennett," Thorne whispered, his smile chillingly calm. "He stole something far more valuable—data regarding proprietary chemical research. For ten years, we assumed Marcus took that secret to his grave. But when his daughter suddenly resurfaces with a extremely rare genetic mutation that matches the exact metabolic profile of that stolen research... one has to wonder if Daniel Harper has been playing a much longer game than anyone realizes."
"Get away from me," Maya said, backing away toward the nurse's station. "I'm calling hospital security."
"Call whoever you like, Doctor," Thorne said smoothly, turning back toward the stairs. "But tell Daniel Harper that hiding behind the government won't keep his family safe forever. The debt Marcus created is still accruing interest."
Before Maya could shout for help, Thorne vanished into the stairwell, the heavy door clicking shut behind him.

Maya ran to the nurse's station, her heart pounding. The nightmare wasn't just about administrative fraud or medical crises.
The monsters Daniel Harper had been running from for fifteen years weren't ghosts. They were real, and they had just found his daughters.
