Chapter 8 - Siege in the Night

At 3:15 AM, the storm hit Mercy General Hospital.

A sudden, catastrophic power outage plunged the entire north wing into pitch-black darkness. The emergency backup generators kicked in four seconds later, flooding the corridors with a eerie red emergency glow, but the hospital’s main security systems, electronic door locks, and internal comms went completely dark.

Inside Room 302, Lucy and Lily sat up in their beds as the monitors beeped erratically.

"Dr. Bennett?" Lucy called out, her voice trembling in the dark.

The heavy door to their room creaked open. A tall figure stepped inside, silhouetted against the crimson emergency light of the hallway. It wasn't Dr. Bennett. It was a man wearing a dark tactical uniform, holding a silenced sidearm.

Behind him, the police officer assigned to guard the door lay unconscious in the hallway.

"Lucy and Lily Harper," the man said, pulling two pre-filled syringes from his vest. "You're coming with us."

"Get away from her!"

From behind the bathroom door, Rachel Harper charged out, holding a heavy metal IV pole like a spear. She slammed the pole into the intruder's chest with all her strength. The man stumbled backward, his gun firing once—the silenced round shattering the glass window looking out into the hallway.

"Run!" Rachel screamed at her daughters. "Run!"

Lucy grabbed Lily’s hand, pulling her weak eleven-year-old sister out of bed. Despite their lingering weakness, adrenaline surged through their veins. They scrambled past the struggling guard out into the red-lit hallway.

At the end of the corridor, Maya and Detective Miller burst through the stairwell doors, weapons drawn.

"Lucy! Lily! Over here!" Maya yelled.

Before the girls could reach them, two more armed men stepped out of the opposite service elevator, blocking their path.

"We have nowhere to go!" Lily sobbed, clinging to her older sister's waist.

Lucy looked around wildly. Her eyes landed on the laundry chute hatch built into the wall beside the nurse's station—a narrow metal door used to send soiled linens down to the basement.

"Lily, get in!" Lucy commanded, throwing the hatch open.

"I'm scared!" Lily cried.

"I won't let anyone hurt you! Jump!" Lucy shoved her younger sister into the padded chute, hearing her slide down into the giant canvas laundry bins three floors below.

As the armed men closed in on Lucy, she turned, met the gaze of the lead intruder, and unhesitatingly dove headfirst into the chute right behind her sister.

Above them, gunshots rang out through the hallway as Detective Miller engaged Thorne's men in a desperate tactical firefight.
