Chapter 5 - The Unearthing

By 3:00 AM, the rain had turned into a slushy, freezing sleet.

Floodlights illuminated the north shore of the estate’s private lake. The roar of diesel engines and the deafening shriek of diamond-tipped concrete saws shattered the night air.

I stood near the edge of the tree line under a large black umbrella, holding Emily close against my side. Vincent refused to let us leave his sight, not out of distrust, but because he knew the moment the news leaked outside these gates, everyone associated with that phone would become a target.

Two heavy excavators tore through the cracked concrete slab of the old boathouse.

Geno walked up to Vincent, holding a ruggedized tablet connected to the ground-penetrating radar array.

“Boss,” Geno said, pointing to a dark anomaly on the digital heat map six feet below the surface. “There’s a sealed steel safety box buried under the original stone foundation. It matches the signature of the old family safe from the 1990s.”

“Clear the dirt,” Vincent ordered, his voice hollowed out by grief and rage.

Within forty minutes, the excavators pulled a mud-caked, blackened steel box out of the ground, dropping it onto the gravel driveway with a metallic crash.

Vincent stepped forward with a heavy crowbar. He smashed the rusted mechanical lock open himself.

Inside the box lay a water-sealed leather briefcase and a small, velvet bag containing a gold wedding band—Sophia’s original ring, the one that matched the band Vincent wore on his right hand.

Beside the ring was a leather-bound journal written in Sophia’s neat, flowing handwriting.

Vincent picked up the journal with shaking hands. He opened the final page, dated October 14, 2023.

“If I die tonight, it was not an accident. Dominic discovered I was auditing the trust. Charles Bellamy forged my signature on the wire transfer documents. They plan to frame Vincent for my murder using a fake flight log to make it look like I fled with estate funds. My husband is innocent. Look for the ledger in Charles’s personal safe at his summer estate in Newport.”

Vincent held the journal against his chest, dropping to his knees on the freezing gravel, letting out a jagged, heartbreaking sob that tore through the sound of the falling rain.
