Chapter 9 - The Rose Garden

Three years later.

Spring had arrived in full bloom across the estate grounds.

The south cottage was vibrant and alive. White climbing roses covered the stone porch, and colorful hand-painted clay pots lined the garden walkway.

Eleven-year-old Emily sat on the porch swing, practicing her cello. The rich, golden notes of her music drifted softly across the lawn where the lake glistened under the bright May sun.

Vincent walked down the garden path carrying a wooden tool box. He had spent the morning helping me build a new trellis for the tomato plants behind the cottage.

Over the last three years, our relationship had grown into something deep, beautiful, and unshakeable. It wasn't built on fear or corporate necessity; it was built on mutual respect, shared healing, and a quiet, profound love that had bloomed naturally out of the ashes of our pasts.

Vincent sat beside me on the porch steps, wiping sweat from his forehead with a dark cloth.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, silver velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat. I looked from the box up into his warm, dark eyes.

“Hannah,” Vincent said softly, taking my hand in his. His touch was warm, gentle, and solid. “Four years ago, I thought my life was over. I thought this house was just a prison built out of regret and grief.”

He opened the velvet box. Inside sat a simple, breathtaking platinum band set with a single, brilliant round diamond that caught the sunlight like a star.

“You and Emily brought light back into my world,” Vincent whispered, his voice rich with deep emotion. “You taught me how to live again. I want to spend the rest of my life protecting you, loving you, and building a future together. Will you marry me?”

Emily stopped playing her cello, leaning over the wooden porch railing with a huge, beaming smile on her face.

I looked at Vincent—the man who had transformed from a hardened, grieving boss into a kind, devoted partner and a loving father figure to my daughter.

“Yes,” I whispered, tears of joy sparkling in my eyes. “Yes, Vincent. I will.”

Vincent smiled, slipping the platinum ring onto my finger before pulling me into a tender, passionate kiss while Emily cheered happily from the porch swing.
