Chapter 10 - The Gala of Light

Five years after the truth was revealed.
The grand salon of the Moretti mansion was packed with hundreds of guests for the fifth annual Sophia Moretti Pediatric Foundation Gala.
Distinguished doctors, philanthropic leaders, city officials, and families who had received free medical care through the trust filled the brightly lit room. The walls were decorated with photos of thriving children, modern hospital wings, and community centers built across the state.
I stood near the entrance in a floor-length emerald green gown, my hair styled in soft waves, holding a glass of sparkling water.
Beside me stood fourteen-year-old Emily, looking grown-up and stunning in a simple navy dress, her dark hair pinned back with a silver pearl comb.
Vincent walked over to us, wearing a perfectly tailored navy tuxedo. He wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close to his side, kissing my cheek softly.
“Are you ready, my love?” Vincent whispered in my ear.
“Always,” I smiled, resting my hand against his chest.
Vincent stepped up to the crystal podium at the front of the room. The entire salon fell into a quiet, respectful hush.
“Welcome, everyone,” Vincent spoke into the microphone, his voice echoing clearly through the grand space. “Eight years ago, this room was a place of shadows, secrets, and grief. I believed that power and wealth were the only things that could keep a family safe.”
He looked out over the crowd, his gaze landing on Emily and me.
“I was wrong,” Vincent continued, his voice filled with incredible warmth and pride. “Safety isn't built with money or iron gates. It is built with truth, with courage, and with love.”
He held out his hand toward us. “Eight years ago, a brave little girl walked into this room with a cracked phone and the courage to speak the truth when adults were too afraid to move. Because of her, justice was restored, a legacy was saved, and thousands of children now have a second chance at life.”
The entire room erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation.

Emily smiled, her cheeks flushing pink as guests turned to clap for her.
Vincent walked off the stage, taking my hand in his left and Emily’s in his right as we stepped out onto the moonlit balcony overlooking the lake.
