Chapter 7 - Sanctuary and Softness

Over the next two weeks, the compound became a peaceful haven amidst the brewing storm outside.

Claire’s physical injuries began to heal rapidly under Doc Sullivan’s care. She moved out of the medical wing and into one of the luxurious guest suites overlooking the estate’s private courtyard.

For the first time in her life, Claire felt completely safe.

One warm evening, Enzo walked into the courtyard to find Sadie sitting on a wooden bench, trying to teach a large, stern-looking guard dog how to shake hands. The massive Rottweiler—trained to bite intruders on sight—was sitting patiently, letting the little girl tie a pink ribbon around its collar.

Enzo couldn't help the small smile that broke across his face. He walked over and sat down beside her on the bench.

"I see you’ve made friends with Brutus," Enzo said softly.

"He's a good boy," Sadie smiled up at him, her cheeks rosy and healthy again. "Mr. Enzo... are we going to stay here forever?"

"Do you want to stay?" Enzo asked.

Sadie nodded enthusiastically. "Mama smiles more here. She isn't crying in her room at night anymore. And I like that you eat dinner with us."

Before Enzo could reply, Claire stepped out onto the patio wearing a simple lavender dress. Her dark hair fell softly over her shoulders, and though a faint bruise still marked her cheek, she looked breathtakingly beautiful.

Enzo stood up as she approached. "You should be resting, Claire."

"Doc Sullivan says I need to walk," she smiled softly, sitting down beside her daughter. She looked at Enzo, her eyes filled with a deep, quiet warmth. "Rosa told me what you did to the traitor in your ranks. She told me you secured the ledger."

"It's over, Claire," Enzo assured her. "The evidence is secured, and Moretti’s territory is crumbling. You and Sadie are safe."

Claire reached out, placing her hand over his. "You've done so much for us, Enzo. You took in two strangers and gave us everything. How can I ever repay you?"

Enzo looked into her dark eyes, feeling a strange, wonderful warmth blooming inside his chest—a feeling he had never experienced in thirty-seven years of darkness.

"Stay," Enzo whispered, his thumb gently caressing the back of her hand. "That's all the repayment I'll ever ask for."

Claire smiled, leaning her head softly against his shoulder as the sun set over the gardens.
