Chapter 8 - The Encounter by the Fountain

Gabriel stood up slowly, taking a hesitant step toward her.

"Amelia," he said, his voice carrying a hollow, desperate tone she had never heard from him before.

She stopped, turning to face him. She didn't feel anger. She didn't feel pity. She simply felt a profound, liberating emptiness where pain used to live.

"Gabriel," she acknowledged neutrally.

"I... I heard about the foundation," he mumbled, looking down at the pavement. "You've done well. The company... it's not the same without—without the structure we had."

"The structure you built was built on lies, Gabriel," Amelia said, her voice calm and steady. "It was bound to collapse."

He swallowed hard, looking up with a flicker of his old, misplaced pride. "Is there any chance... can we talk about starting over? We had history, Amelia."

Amelia smiled—a genuine, pitying smile that cut him deeper than any insult could have.

"History is something you learn from, Gabriel, not something you repeat," she said softly. "I hope you find peace. Truly."

Without waiting for an answer, she turned and walked away, her steps light and unburdened.
