Two years after the day she wore the gray cotton uniform, Amelia hosted a gala at the estate—not to impress high-society acquaintances or stroke a husband's ego, but to celebrate the two-year anniversary of the women's sanctuary she had built.
The ballroom was filled with laughter, bright music, and women who had reclaimed their lives from the shadows of deception.
Olivia stood beside her near the grand staircase, watching the crowd with a glass of sparkling cider in hand.
"You know," Olivia murmured with a playful smirk, "that dress looks much better on you than the gray cotton did."
Amelia laughed, the sound ringing out clear and bright through the hall. "I think the gray cotton served its purpose, Olivia. It stripped away the illusions."
