Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW OF ISABELLA

The quiet inside the room was louder than a gunshot.

Silana Moretti did not move. The crystal glass in his hand trembled, pouring amber bourbon onto the polished mahogany desk, soaking into important financial documents and pooling near a stack of brass casings.

"Mateo..." he whispered again, his voice raw, stripped of all authority, reduced to that of a broken father staring at a phantom.

Dominic, a man who had killed eighteen men without blinking, lowered his pistol. His hand shook. He looked from the small child on the blood-spattered Persian rug to his boss, who had not spoken his dead son’s name in three years.

Little Leo didn't know he was in the center of a kill zone. He reached out with both hands, his tiny fingers grasping at the gold ring glinting on Silana’s pinky.

"Da!" Leo babbled happily, letting out another bright, clear laugh that shattered the dark, violent aura of the room.

At that moment, the heavy oak door was shoved open.

Bella rushed in, her eyes wide with terror, her face white as a sheet. She threw herself onto her knees right on top of the bloody rug, scooping Leo into her arms, pressing the baby’s face against her collarbone.

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry, Mr. Moretti!" Bella sobbed, her whole body shaking violently as she cradled her child. "Please don't hurt him! He didn't mean to—he doesn't know anything! Take my life, please, but let my baby live!"

Silana didn't reach for his gun. He slowly walked around his desk, his heavy leather shoes making soft, deliberate sounds on the rug. He stopped right in front of Bella, looking down.

Dominic stepped forward, his guard returning. "Sil, who is this maid? How did a kid get into the West Wing?"

Silana raised a single hand, silencing Dominic instantly. He slowly crouched down until he was at eye level with Bella and the baby. Up close, the terrifying mob boss looked fragile, his eyes bright with unshed tears.

He reached out a gloved hand. His thick, calloused fingers gently touched a soft lock of dark, curly hair on Leo’s forehead.

"What is his name?" Silana asked. His voice was raspy, almost gentle.

"L-Leo," Bella gasped out through her tears. "His name is Leo."

"How old?"

"Eight months... he's eight months old."

Silana’s heart slammed against his ribs. Eight months. If Mateo had lived, if the car bomb three years ago hadn't torn his world apart, his son would have been older, but the uncanny resemblance was haunting. The shape of the eyes, the tiny dimple on the left cheek, the dark curls—it was as if Isabella’s bloodline had returned to this dark house to demand answers.

Silana’s eyes shifted from the child to Bella. He saw the sheer terror in her brown eyes, but behind the fear, he saw something else: a mother willing to die to shield her child.

"Dominic," Silana commanded without taking his eyes off the baby.

"Yeah, boss?"

"Take Lorenzo to the basement. Lock him in the east cell. We will deal with his betrayal later."

Lorenzo, still bleeding on the floor, let out a ragged breath of relief. He knew he had just been spared an immediate execution solely because a baby had crawled into the room.

"And the maid?" Dominic asked softly.

Silana stood up, pulling a white linen handkerchief from his breast pocket and wiping the bourbon from his desk.

"Bring her to my private dining room," Silana ordered. "And get a doctor. Check the child. Make sure he wasn't exposed to anything in this violent house."

Bella looked up in utter shock. She had expected a bullet. Instead, she was being offered a doctor for her son.

As Dominic dragged Lorenzo out, Silana stood alone in his office. He looked down at his desk at a silver-framed photograph he had kept locked in his drawer for three years: a picture of his late wife Isabella, smiling warmly, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.

Silana touched the glass over Isabella’s face.

"Is this your doing, my love?" he whispered to the empty room. "Did you send them to me?"
