Chapter 3 - The Grip of the Boss

Anthony Pellagrini did not run; he moved with a terrifying, calculated speed that made the air in the garden turn cold despite the July heat.

Behind him, three of his personal security detail rushed onto the patio, their hands instinctively reaching inside their tailored suit jackets. But Anthony ignored them. His dark, piercing eyes were locked entirely on the wet maid kneeling in the shallow water, holding his sobbing son.

"Luca," Anthony said, his voice a low, vibrating growl of paternal terror and absolute command.

He reached the edge of the steps in three long strides, his expensive leather shoes stepping directly into the pool of water draining from Samantha’s uniform. He bent down, his massive, powerful hands taking Luca from her arms with an unyielding but surprisingly gentle grip.

"Daddy!" Luca wailed, transferring his wet grip to his father’s neck.

Anthony pulled his son against his chest, his eyes scanning the boy’s face, his chest, his breathing. He checked his pulse with a practiced, steady thumb. "Is he hurt?" Anthony asked, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet cadence.

"He... he swallowed some water," Samantha gasped, her body shivering as she sat on the stone ledge, her soaked hair plastered to her cheeks. "But he’s breathing. He cleared his lungs."

Anthony looked down at her.

For three weeks, he had passed her in the hallways without a single glance. To him, she had been a shadow that kept his floors clean. But now, as she sat shivering in her ruined uniform, her eyes wide with a mix of exhaustion and fear, he looked at her as if she were the only person in the entire world.

His dark eyes, normally devoid of any emotion other than calculation, flared with a fierce, possessive intensity.

"Who left the doors unlocked?" Anthony asked, his voice quiet, but carrying a promise of violence that made the three guards behind him stand perfectly still.

"Mr. Pellagrini..." the head guard, a man named Russo, began, his face draining of color. "The nanny was supposed to be—"

"I don't care about 'supposed to be,' Russo," Anthony interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. "Take Luca inside. Have Dr. Vance check him immediately."

Anthony handed his son to Russo, his eyes never leaving Samantha. Luca reached out for her, crying, but Russo carried him quickly toward the house.

Samantha began to push herself up, her wet sneakers slipping slightly on the travertine. "I... I should go change," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I need to get back to my landing..."

Before she could stand, Anthony’s hand shot out.

His large, warm fingers wrapped securely around her wrist. The grip was not painful, but it was absolute. It was the grip of a man who ruled half the state’s shadows, a man who had never accepted 'no' as an answer.

"You're not going anywhere, Samantha," Anthony said, his dark eyes locking onto hers.

"Mr. Pellagrini, please," she pleaded, her heart hammering against her ribs for a completely different reason now. "I was just doing my job. I need to get back to—"

"Your job is no longer cleaning my windows," Anthony said, pulling her slightly closer, his gaze scanning her pale face, her shivering shoulders, and the raw courage written in her eyes. "You saved my son's life. In my world, that makes you the most valuable asset in this house."

He leaned down, his voice a dark, intimate whisper that sent a shiver straight down her spine.

"You're never leaving this estate, Samantha. From today, you belong to the Pellagrini family."
