Chapter 7 - The Gala of Whispers

The annual Hartford Charity Gala was the most exclusive social event of the year—a place where the city’s wealthy elites, corrupt politicians, and mafia bosses drank vintage champagne under the guise of philanthropy.

Anthony had insisted that Samantha accompany him.

"You need to show the world that you are no longer a shadow, Samantha," Anthony had told her.

The transformation was breathtaking. Samantha stood in front of the full-length mirror in her suite, wearing a stunning, midnight-blue silk gown that clung to her curves, her dark hair styled into a sophisticated updo that exposed her elegant neck. Around her throat hung a diamond necklace that cost more than she had earned in her entire life.

"You look beautiful, Sam," a small voice said from the doorway.

She turned to find Luca standing there, wearing a tiny black tuxedo that made him look like a miniature version of his father.

"Thank you, my little prince," Samantha smiled, kneeling down to hug him. "You look very handsome too."

Anthony stepped into the room, looking devastatingly powerful in his custom black tuxedo. He stopped, his eyes scanning Samantha from head to toe, a sudden, fierce pride shining in his dark gaze.

"They won't know what hit them," Anthony murmured, walking over and offering her his arm.

The gala was held at the historic Hartford City Hall, the grand ballroom illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers. As Anthony and Samantha entered, a sudden, heavy silence swept across the room. The whispers were deafening.

"Is that the maid?"

"The one who saved his son?"

"She looks like a queen..."

Anthony ignored the whispers, walking with a calm, aristocratic elegance that commanded absolute respect. He introduced Samantha to senators, bankers, and municipal judges as his personal companion—a title that carried more weight than any wedding ring in their world.

But the peace did not last.

Halfway through the evening, a tall, older man with a cruel, thin mouth approached them. It was Leo Moretti, the head of the rival Moretti syndicate. Behind him stood four of his senior enforcers.

"Anthony," Leo Moretti sneered, his eyes scanning Samantha with an insulting, dirty look. "I see you brought your domestic help to the party. Is she the one who cleans your floors... or does she have other duties?"

Before Anthony could react, Samantha stepped forward. Her face was a mask of cold, unyielding disdain.

"Mr. Moretti," Samantha said, her voice clear and resonant, carrying across the quiet circle of guests. "I might have cleaned floors, but at least I can wash the dirt off my hands. Unlike you... who needs a federal grand jury to wash yours."

A collective gasp swept through the crowd. Leo Moretti’s face turned an ugly, choked shade of red, his hands clenching into fists.

Anthony stepped in front of Samantha, his shadow completely covering the rival Don. "You heard her, Leo. Walk away before I decide that this ballroom needs a new coat of paint."

Leo Moretti glared at them, his eyes burning with a lethal promise of revenge. "This isn't over, Pellagrini. Enjoy your maid while you can."

As Moretti walked away, Anthony turned to Samantha, a rare, genuine smile of pure admiration touching his lips. "You are magnificent, Samantha. A true queen."

"I told you," she whispered, her heart hammering with a mix of fear and excitement. "I don't bow to monsters."
