Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

Two days later, Claire was officially discharged from Massachusetts Harbor Medical Center.
Rather than returning to her cramped, two-room rented apartment in the outskirts of the city, Ethan had arranged for a specialized medical transport to take Claire and the triplets to his private seaside home in Chatham, Cape Cod—the estate he had legally transferred to her name.
Claire sat in the backseat of the luxury suburban van, holding Lucas while nurses helped secure Emma and Grace in their custom, state-of-the-art infant car seats. Ethan sat in the front passenger seat, constantly checking his side mirrors. He didn't want to intrude on her space, yet he refused to leave her unguarded.
When they arrived at the Chatham estate, Claire gasped. It was a sprawling, white-shingled coastal home nestled on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by tall fences and gated security. The interior was warm, flooded with natural light, and completely outfitted for three newborns: three cribs, automated night-lights, round-the-clock private pediatric nurses hired by Ethan, and a fully stocked pantry.
"I didn't know you owned this," Claire admitted softly as Ethan carried her bags into the master bedroom suite overlooking the ocean.
"I bought it three years ago," Ethan said, placing the bags down gently. "I never brought my parents here. It was the only place I owned that felt... unpolluted by them. I wanted to bring you here last year... before you vanished."
Claire sat on the edge of the plush bed, rubbing her tired temples. "Ethan... we need to talk about what happens now. Your parents aren't going to just accept this. You humiliated Victor publicly. The news is calling your resignation the biggest corporate scandal in New England history."
"Let them talk," Ethan said dismissively. He walked over to the bassinet where Grace was wriggling, expertly picking her up and cradling her head against his shoulder. Over the past 48 hours, Ethan had spent every waking minute learning how to burp, feed, and hold his children under the guidance of the hospital nurses. He moved with a natural, fierce fatherly instinct that surprised Claire.
"It’s not just talk, Ethan," Claire said, her voice laced with worry. "My mother... Sarah..."
Ethan paused, looking at her carefully. "What about Sarah?"
"When your mother threatened me," Claire began, her knuckles tightening on the bedsheets, "she said she had evidence that Sarah’s recent relapse six months ago was linked to an illegal prescription ring. My mother is clean now, Ethan! She’s been in rehab in Vermont for four months. But your mother swore that if I didn't stay away from you, she would drop that evidence on the district attorney’s desk and have my mother indicted on felony charges."
Ethan’s eyes darkened with cold fury. "My mother manipulated the evidence. I guarantee it." He walked over, carrying Grace, and sat on the bench at the foot of Claire’s bed. "Claire, listen to me. Your mother is currently safe. I sent two of my best security details to the facility in Vermont yesterday morning. Nobody gets to her. And I’ve already hired the top criminal defense attorney in New England to review whatever fake evidence my parents claim to have."
Claire stared at him, tears welling in her eyes. "Why are you doing all of this? After I left you... after I let you believe I abandoned you?"
Ethan reached out with his free hand, gently taking her fingers in his. "Because you were trying to protect your mother and our babies from wolves, Claire. You were fighting alone against a multi-billion-dollar monster. I don't blame you for running. I blame myself for not realizing my family was the monster you were running from."
Before Claire could respond, Ethan’s phone buzzed on the nightstand. He looked at the caller ID.
It was Julian Vance, his lead attorney.
"Ethan," Julian’s voice came through the speaker, urgent and sharp. "We have a problem. Victor isn't retreating. He just filed an emergency petition with the Suffolk County Family Court."
Ethan stood up straight, his grip on his phone tightening. "On what grounds?"

"He’s claiming Claire Bennett is an unfit mother due to her family history of substance abuse, and he’s petitioning for emergency grandparental custody of all three infants. And Ethan... he’s dragged your ex-fiancée, Victoria Sterling, into this. Her family’s PR firm just launched a massive smear campaign against Claire in the press."
Claire heard the words through the speakerphone. Her face drained of color as the nightmare she had fled ten months ago returned with terrifying force.
