Chapter 4 - The Smear Campaign

By the following morning, the media circus had reached a fever pitch.

"GOLD-DIGGING NURSE HIDES TRIPLETS FROM CALDWELL HEIR," read the headline on the front page of a prominent Boston tabloid. Photos of Claire leaving her shift at her former clinic, looking tired and unpolished, were splashed alongside glamorous photos of Ethan’s ex-fiancée, Victoria Sterling—the daughter of a banking tycoon whom Victor Caldwell had always wished Ethan would marry.

In a televised interview, Victoria Sterling shed polished tears for the camera. "Ethan is a good man who was tragically taken advantage of by a woman looking for a payday," Victoria claimed. "His family is simply trying to ensure those innocent children are raised in a stable, moral environment."

Inside the Chatham estate, Claire stood in front of the television in the living room, clutching a bottle of baby formula, her body trembling with outrage and helplessness.

"Turn it off," Ethan commanded as he walked into the room, snatching the remote and cutting the display to black.

"They’re calling me a fraud, Ethan," Claire choked out, her voice breaking. "They’re telling the world I trapped you. The social workers are going to read this. The family court judge—"

"The family court judge will read facts, not tabloid trash," Ethan said firmly, stepping close to her and taking the bottle from her shaking hands. He placed it on the counter, then wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

Claire instinctively resisted for a second, but the overwhelming warmth and security of his body broke her defense. She collapsed against him, resting her forehead against his shoulder as deep, wracking sobs shook her frame.

"I tried so hard to protect them, Ethan," she sobbed into his shirt. "I worked double shifts until I was seven months pregnant. I lived on canned soup so I could save money for their cribs. And now they’re painting me as a monster..."

"Let them paint whatever they want," Ethan whispered into her hair, holding her tight, resting his chin on top of her head. "They have money and newspapers. We have the truth. And I promise you, Claire, on my life, no one is taking Emma, Grace, or Lucas away from you. Over my dead body."

He held her for a long time, listening to the ocean waves crash against the cliffs outside, feeling the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest until her breathing stabilized. For the first time in ten months, Claire felt a flicker of genuine safety.

An hour later, Julian Vance arrived at the estate accompanied by a tall, stern woman with gray hair pinned in a tight bun.

"Claire, Ethan, this is Dr. Aris Thorne," Julian introduced. "She is the former chief of child protective services for the state of Massachusetts and now works as an independent court evaluator."

Dr. Thorne walked over to the nursery area where the triplets were sleeping under the watchful eye of the private nurse. She inspected the clean, secure environment, checked the medical logs, and then turned to face Claire.

"Miss Bennett," Dr. Thorne said gently. "Victor Caldwell’s attorneys have submitted affidavits claiming you are mentally unstable and incapable of caring for three infants simultaneously. I am here to conduct an independent assessment before the emergency hearing tomorrow morning."

"Ask me anything," Claire said, stepping forward, her eyes clear and unyielding. "Inspect whatever you want."

For three hours, Dr. Thorne evaluated Claire. She examined Claire’s prenatal medical records, her stellar employment history at Boston General, her clean drug screens, and her meticulous care routine for the triplets. Dr. Thorne also questioned Ethan, observing the way he operated seamlessly alongside Claire to care for the babies.

When the evaluation concluded, Dr. Thorne shut her leather binder.

"Victor Caldwell’s filing is a malicious abuse of the court system," Dr. Thorne stated flatly. "In my thirty years of practice, I have rarely seen a mother as dedicated, resilient, and capable as you, Miss Bennett. And Mr. Caldwell... your total abandonment of your family’s corporate interests in favor of protecting these children speaks volumes."

Claire released a breath she felt she had been holding for days.

"However," Dr. Thorne added, her tone turning grave. "Tomorrow’s hearing is presided over by Judge Harold Brooks. He is an old college classmate of Victor Caldwell. Victor isn't trying to win on merits tomorrow. He’s looking for a temporary custody order to remove the children from your care for thirty days while 'investigations' take place."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Thirty days with my parents would destroy Claire. It’s a trap to break her spirit."

"Then we don't give Judge Brooks the chance," Julian Vance said, pulling a red folder from his briefcase. "Ethan, it’s time to unleash the nuclear option we discussed."
