Chapter 8 - The Promise on the Cliff

Ethan slipped off the bench and dropped to one knee on the weathered stone patio. The firelight flickered across his sharp jawline and the intense, tender heat in his dark eyes.
"Ethan..." Claire gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.
"Claire," Ethan began, his voice low and full of deep emotion. "Ten months ago, I thought I had lost the most incredible woman I had ever met. I didn't know that while I was grieving, you were quietly becoming the most courageous, unbreakable mother on earth, carrying three lives through the storm."
He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a breathtaking ring—not a ostentatious, massive diamond like the ones his mother had always worn, but a custom-designed platinum band set with a radiant sea-blue sapphire, flanked by three brilliant, small diamonds.
"The sapphire represents the ocean where we brought our children to be safe," Ethan said, his voice trembling slightly. "And the three diamonds represent Lucas, Emma, and Grace. Claire... I don't want to make promises about a perfect life, because life tested us in the cruelest ways possible. But I promise to stand between you and any storm that ever tries to touch you again. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
Tears spilled over Claire’s eyelashes, reflecting the warm firelight. She didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes!" she sobbed happily, dropping to her knees beside him on the stone floor. "Yes, Ethan! Absolutely yes!"

Ethan slipped the sapphire ring onto her finger, framing her face with his hands and pulling her into a passionate, breathtaking kiss. The wind off the Atlantic blew around them, carrying away every painful memory of Room 614, every threat from Victor Caldwell, and every tear shed in isolation.
They sat together by the fire late into the night, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, planning a small, private wedding—no high-society press, no corporate donors, just family, real friends, and three baby bassinets parked right beside the alter.
