Chapter 3 - The Paperwork of Cruelty

By six o'clock the following morning, the storm had cleared, leaving a pale, icy dawn hanging over the city.

Inside Marcus's study, the air was thick with the smell of stale coffee and printed court documents. While Chloe remained asleep in the guest bedroom upstairs, Marcus and Benjamin worked through the public records of the Patterson family.

What they uncovered made Benjamin’s blood boil.

"Look at this," Marcus said, tapping a finger on a illuminated tablet screen. "Chloe’s mother, Eleanor Patterson, passed away seven months ago from late-stage leukemia. She was a single mother. But before she died, Eleanor didn't leave Chloe to her sister Rebecca."

Benjamin leaned closer. "What do you mean?"

"Eleanor filed a legal guardianship document naming a local trust to oversee Chloe’s life until her biological father could be traced," Marcus explained, scrolling through the legal filings. "Rebecca Patterson contested the will, gained temporary custody of Chloe, and immediately applied for state survival benefits and Eleanor’s small life insurance policy—worth roughly two hundred thousand dollars."

"Where is the money?" Benjamin asked grimly.

"Gone," Marcus replied coldly. "Drained into offshore gaming accounts and private debt within ninety days of Eleanor's death. Once the insurance money ran out three weeks ago, Rebecca abandoned Chloe on the streets of Manhattan to avoid paying child support or housing costs."

"That disgusting, vile woman," Benjamin growled, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table. "She used that baby as an ATM, robbed her blind, and threw her out like trash!"

"It gets worse," Marcus cautioned. "Why did Rebecca call CPS last night? Because according to state law, if a child under temporary guardianship goes missing for more than thirty days, the court revokes the guardianship, and Rebecca would be forced to repay the state benefits she fraudulently collected. She needed Chloe found and placed in state care so the paper trail would end!"

"I'm going to destroy her," Benjamin said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "I will spend fifty million dollars to make sure Rebecca Patterson spends the rest of her life in a federal penitentiary."

"We have to deal with the immediate problem first," Marcus warned. "At nine o'clock this morning, Family Court Judge Harold Vance—who happens to be Agent Margaret Vance’s brother-in-law—is holding an emergency hearing regarding your obstruction last night. They’ve issued a subpoena for you to produce the child."

A soft creak sounded at the doorway.

Benjamin turned. Chloe was standing in the doorframe, wearing one of Marcus's oversized cotton t-shirts that hung down to her ankles like a nightgown. She was clutching her stuffed rabbit, her eyes wide with terror as she overheard the legal jargon.

"Mr. Ben?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Are they coming with the handcuffs now?"

Benjamin immediately got up, crossed the room, and dropped to one knee before her. He took her tiny, cold hands into his own warm palms.

"Nobody is putting handcuffs on anyone, Chloe," Benjamin assured her, looking straight into her eyes with total sincerity. "I am going to court today. I am going to stand before the judge, and I am going to tell him the truth."

"Will you come back?" she asked, tears welling up again. "Everyone who leaves... they don't come back."

Benjamin reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his father’s silver pocket watch—a priceless family heirloom he carried everywhere. He placed the heavy, ticking silver watch into Chloe’s small hand and folded her fingers over it.

"You hold onto this for me," Benjamin said softly. "This watch is the most important thing I own. I can't leave without it. So you know I have to come back to you. Deal?"

May you like

Chloe looked at the shiny watch, feeling its warm weight in her palm. A tiny, fragile smile touched her lips for the first time.

"Deal," she whispered.
