Chapter 6 - Shadows from the Dark

Three months passed, transforming life at the Crawford estate into a tapestry of joy and quiet routines.

The once-silent halls now rang with the sound of laughter, small footsteps, and classical music. Chloe had settled into a prestigious private academy nearby, excelling in art and reading. Her cheeks had filled out, her golden hair shone with health, and the smudges of the street had been replaced by a bright, radiant smile.

Benjamin had fundamentally restructured his life. The tech executive who once worked sixteen-hour days now made it a point to be home by five o'clock every afternoon to help Chloe with her homework, eat dinner at the kitchen table, and read her bedtime stories.

However, peace in the Crawford home was short-lived.

On a rainy November evening, while Benjamin and Chloe were sitting in the living room building a complex Lego castle, Marcus Sterling arrived unannounced. His face was grim, carrying a black leather briefcase.

"Chloe, sweetheart," Benjamin said gently, setting his Lego bricks down. "Why don't you go upstairs and finish coloring your dragon picture? I need to speak with Uncle Marcus for a few minutes."

"Okay, Dad!" Chloe said happily, scooping up her crayons and skipping up the stairs.

The word Dad still made Benjamin’s heart swell with an intense, protective pride every single time she said it.

Once Chloe’s bedroom door closed upstairs, Marcus turned to Benjamin, his expression deeply troubled.

"What's wrong?" Benjamin asked, pouring two glasses of sparkling water. "Did the final adoption hearing get delayed?"

"It's worse than that, Ben," Marcus said, sitting down heavily on the sofa. "Rebecca Patterson’s criminal defense attorney just filed a motion in civil court. They’ve produced a man claiming to be Chloe’s biological father."

Benjamin froze, his glass stopping halfway to his mouth. "What?"

"His name is Gregory Vance—no relation to the judge, thank God," Marcus explained, pulling a file from his briefcase. "He's a low-level criminal with a history of extortion, drug distribution, and assault. He abandoned Eleanor Patterson when she was two months pregnant with Chloe and never paid a single cent of child support."

"And now he wants her?" Benjamin hissed, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle jumped beneath his cheek.

"He doesn't want her," Marcus corrected bitterly. "He wants your money. Rebecca Patterson contacted him from county jail. They realize that if Gregory asserts his biological parental rights, he can challenge your adoption petition, demand custody, and force you into a multi-million-dollar out-of-court settlement to relinquish his rights."

"Extortion," Benjamin growled, his eyes burning with lethal fury.

"Pure and simple," Marcus agreed. "The problem is, New York state law heavily favors biological parents unless we can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is entirely unfit, or that he legally severed his rights years ago. His legal team has demanded a mandatory paternity test and a custodial visitation meeting this Friday."

Benjamin stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-soaked gardens.

"Over my dead body," Benjamin whispered, his voice trembling with terrifying rage. "That monster abandoned Eleanor when she was pregnant, let his daughter starve on the streets, and now he wants to use her as a bargaining chip? I will destroy him."

"We have to play this smart, Ben," Marcus urged. "If you attack him publicly, his lawyers will claim you’re using your billionaire wealth to bully a poor biological father out of his child. The press will eat it up, and the judge might stay the adoption indefinitely."

Benjamin turned around, his eyes cold and calculated.

"Then we don't attack him publicly," Benjamin said softly. "We dig into his life until we find the nightmare he’s hiding. Call my private intelligence team, Marcus. I want every bank account, every phone call, every dirty secret Gregory Vance has ever touched on my desk by tomorrow morning."
