Chapter 5 - The Room with Yellow Walls

The afternoon sun broke through the clouds, casting long golden light across the manicured lawns of the Crawford estate as the black Bentley pulled up the driveway.

The iron gates were fully repaired, standing strong and secure against the outside world.

Benjamin stepped out of the car, opened the passenger door, and unbuckled Chloe’s seatbelt. The little girl looked up at the massive stone mansion, her eyes wide with hesitation.

"Is the lady with the clipboard inside?" Chloe asked softly.

"No, sweetheart," Benjamin smiled gently, lifting her out of the car. "Nobody is inside except us. And you don't ever have to hide in the pantry again."

He took her small hand, and together they walked through the grand front doors into the warm, sunlit foyer. The mansion no longer felt empty; the hollow echoes that had haunted Benjamin for three years seemed to evaporate the moment Chloe’s small shoes tapped against the marble floor.

"Come with me," Benjamin said. "I want to show you something."

He led her up the sweeping spiral staircase, down the long second-floor hallway, and stopped before a tall white door at the very end of the corridor.

He turned the brass handle and pushed the door open.

Chloe stepped into the room and gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

The walls were painted a soft, warm yellow, bathed in the light of the afternoon sun streaming through tall arched windows. In the center of the room sat a beautiful canopy bed covered in soft velvet blankets and a mountain of plush stuffed animals. Bookshelves lined the walls, filled with fairy tales, coloring books, and art supplies. On the nightstand sat a brand-new silver hairbrush and a framed photograph of Chloe and her mother that Benjamin’s team had recovered from Eleanor’s apartment.

"This..." Chloe whispered, her voice trembling as she walked slowly toward the bed, touching the soft velvet blanket with her fingertips. "This looks like a princess room."

"This is your room, Chloe," Benjamin said softly, leaning against the doorframe with his arms folded, a deep sense of warmth blooming in his chest. "I promised my wife a long time ago that a little girl would fill this room with noise, drawings, and happiness. It took eight years, but you’re finally here."

Chloe turned around, tears shimmering in her eyes. She reached into her pocket and pulled out Benjamin’s silver pocket watch.

She walked over to him and held it out with both hands. "I kept it safe. Just like I promised."

Benjamin took the watch, tucked it into his vest pocket, and then dropped to his knees before her. "Thank you, Chloe."

Without warning, the little girl wrapped her small arms tightly around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder.

"Thank you, Mr. Ben," she sobbed softly, holding onto him with all her tiny strength. "Thank you for finding me."

Benjamin closed his eyes, holding the child close against his heart, feeling tears of his own spill over his lashes. "I didn't find you, sweetheart. You found me."
