Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

At 2100 hours, Ethan Prescott secretly entered the Federal Building in downtown Charlotte through a basement loading dock, escorted by U.S. Marshals. He sat in a cold glass interrogation room, sweating through his designer suit, and signed a forty-page federal proffer agreement.
He sang like a canary.
He detailed every offshore wire transfer, every corrupt state official his mother had paid off, and every detail of how they had trapped Emily in the guest house to prevent her from exposing their shell company network. He handed over digital encryption keys that his mother kept hidden in a safe behind a painting in her master bedroom.
"My mother planned everything," Ethan sobbed into his hands, his voice recorded on digital tape. "She said Emily was disposable. She said if Emily didn't cooperate, we could just pay off a private clinic in Switzerland to keep her drugged for the rest of her life."
I watched the confession from behind a two-way mirror, my arms crossed over my chest. Standing beside me was Federal Prosecutor James Miller.
"We have enough for arrest warrants," Miller whispered, turning to me. "For Margaret, Brandon, Senator Vance, and six other high-ranking corporate officers."
"Execute the warrants simultaneously at dawn," I said. "I want them taken down before they realize Ethan flipped."
"Colonel," Miller hesitated, looking at my uniform. "Technically, you shouldn't be present for the arrest raid. You're a witness and a plaintiff."

I turned my head slowly and looked at him.
Miller swallowed hard. "I'll make sure you're in the command vehicle right behind the tactical team."
