Chapter 9 - Justice Served

Eight months later. The United States District Court in Charlotte was packed to full capacity for the final sentencing hearing.

Margaret, Brandon, and Ethan Prescott sat at the defense table dressed in bright orange federal inmate jumpsuits, their hands tethered to their waists by heavy steel chains. The designer suits were gone. The luxury watches were gone. The arrogance had been utterly erased, replaced by hollow, defeated stares.

Judge Katherine Vance (no relation to the disgraced senator) slammed her gavel down to bring the courtroom to order.

"In my twenty-five years on the federal bench," Judge Vance spoke, looking down sternly over her glasses at the defense table, "I have rarely seen a more despicable abuse of wealth, power, and privilege. The defendants operated a shadow enterprise that exploited human beings, corrupted public officials, and attempted to violently destroy a young woman's life to protect their financial greed."

She looked at Emily, who sat beside me in the front gallery row, holding my hand tightly.

"Mrs. Emily Hart," the judge said warmly. "You showed unimaginable bravery in stepping forward into the light."

The judge then turned back to the convicted family and read the final sentences:

Margaret Prescott: Sentenced to 35 years in a federal maximum-security facility without the possibility of parole.

Brandon Prescott: Sentenced to 28 years in federal prison.

Ethan Prescott: Sentenced to 10 years in a medium-security facility, reflecting his cooperation with federal authorities.

Former Senator Richard Vance: Sentenced to 15 years for public corruption.

As the U.S. Marshals led the three Prescotts away in chains, Margaret turned her head one last time to look at us. She saw Emily sitting tall, strong, and completely unbothered, her head resting gently on my shoulder.

Margaret let out a quiet, defeated sob as the heavy steel doors of the holding cell slammed shut behind her, ending the Prescott dynasty forever.
