Chapter 8 - The Trial of Shadows

Six months later.
The Federal District Court was packed to maximum capacity for the final trial and sentencing of Lady Victoria Sterling and her co-conspirators.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Rosalie, who wore an exquisite emerald-green dress, and Noah, who sat proudly in a miniature navy blue suit.
At the defense table sat Lady Victoria Sterling, dressed in a plain grey prison jumpsuit. Her once-impeccable hair was streaked with grey, her aristocratic posture broken, her cold eyes hollow and defeated.
The federal judge slammed her gavel down on the wooden bench, bringing the courtroom to absolute silence.
"Victoria Sterling," the judge spoke, her voice echoing clearly off the high marble walls. "For the crimes of conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated kidnapping, child endangerment, corporate fraud, and human trafficking, this court finds you guilty on all counts."
The judge adjusted her glasses, looking down at the disgraced matriarch with cold disgust.
"You sacrificed your own son's happiness, stole a mother from her child, and abused your immense wealth to inflict unimaginable cruelty for five long years. You are sentenced to life imprisonment at the Hazelton Federal Correctional Institution, without the possibility of parole."
Victoria didn't scream or make a scene. She simply hung her head as federal marshals pulled her up by her arms and led her through the heavy iron doors at the side of the courtroom, taking her away into the deep, permanent shadows of a lifetime in prison.
As the doors clicked shut behind her, Rosalie took a long, deep breath, feeling the last remaining knot of fear in her soul untie itself forever.
Alexander reached over, taking her hand in his, their fingers interlocking perfectly.

"It's over, my love," Alexander whispered.
"No," Rosalie smiled, looking at Noah, who was smiling up at them. "Our real life is finally starting."
