Chapter 6 - The Eye of the Storm

That evening, the park was aglow with thousands of lights. Daisy and I secured a prime spot on the balcony of the contemporary resort, watching the fireworks spectacular over Cinderella’s Castle. As the music swelled and explosions of gold and silver lit up the night sky, Daisy reached up and wrapped her arms around my neck.

"Thank you, Grandpa," she whispered into my ear. "This is the best day of my life."

"You deserve the best days every day, Daisy," I told her, holding her tight.

But the peace didn't last long. When we returned to the Grand Floridian later that night, the atmosphere in the lobby was noticeably tense. Standing near the elevators were two men in dark suits, conversing in low tones with the hotel duty manager. As soon as I walked in with Daisy, one of the men looked up and pointed in our direction.

"Mr. Grant Sterling?" the taller man asked, stepping forward. He pulled a manila envelope from his jacket. "You have been served. This is an emergency order to show cause regarding the immediate return of a minor child, filed in the family court of our home state."

I didn't flinch. I took the envelope with a calm, practiced ease. "Thank you. Have a good evening, gentlemen."

Sarah and Julian emerged from behind a pillar, Sarah wearing a smug, triumphant grin. "It's over, Grant," she said loudly. "The law is on our side. Hand over Daisy right now, or these process servers will call the local police to enforce the order."

Daisy shrank back, terrified, tears welling up in her eyes again. "Grandpa, don't let them take me!"

"Nobody is taking you anywhere, Daisy," I said, my voice completely steady.

I opened the envelope, glanced at the documents, and smiled. It was indeed a petition for an emergency injunction, but it hadn't been signed by a judge yet. It was merely a motion filed by Sarah's lawyers, meant to intimidate me.

Before Sarah could gloat further, my phone buzzed with an urgent email notification. It was from Judge Marcus Vance. Attached was a certified PDF document bearing the official seal of the court.

I looked up at Sarah and Julian, my eyes turning into chips of ice.

"You should really check your emails from your legal counsel, Sarah," I said smoothly. "Because while your lawyers were busy drafting this piece of garbage, my office was presenting actual evidence to the chief judge."

I opened the PDF on my phone and held it out so Julian could read it.

"This is an Emergency Ex-Parte Order for Temporary Custody, signed by Judge Vance exactly ten minutes ago. It grants me sole legal and physical custody of Daisy effective immediately. Furthermore, it cites both of you for gross child endangerment and orders you to surrender Daisy's passport and identification documents to me right now."

Julian’s face went entirely white. He grabbed his phone, his hands shaking as he opened an email from his own attorney. The look of pure terror on his face confirmed he was reading the exact same news.

"What?" Sarah screamed, snatching the phone from Julian's hand. "No! This is impossible! We are her parents! You can't do this!"

"I just did," I said. "Julian, hand over her passport. If you don't, I will have the Orange County Sheriff's department here within five minutes to execute this court order, and you can spend the rest of your Disney vacation in a county jail cell."
