Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Secrets

Julian, completely broken, reached into his backpack and pulled out a small leather folder containing Daisy's passport and adoption decrees. He handed them to me without looking at his wife.

"Julian, what are you doing?!" Sarah shrieked, hitting his shoulder. "Fight him! He’s taking our daughter!"

"He’s not taking her, Sarah! He already took her!" Julian yelled back, finally snapping under the pressure. "I told you leaving her alone was a bad idea! I told you we should have just paid for the extra ticket! Now look what you’ve done!"

"What I did?" Sarah yelled. "You agreed to it! You wanted a family trip with just our son!"

Our son. The words slipped out of her mouth before she could stop them. In her fury, her true feelings had finally been laid bare in front of everyone in the lobby, including Daisy.

I slipped the documents securely into my pocket. "Thank you for confirming that on the record, Sarah. I’m sure the court will find your definition of 'family' very enlightening during the full custody hearing next month."

Without another word, I guided Daisy toward the elevators. She was quiet on the ride up to our suite, processing the explosive argument she had just witnessed. When we got into the room, she sat on the edge of the large plush bed.

"Grandpa?" she asked softly. "Does Sarah hate me because I'm adopted?"

It was the hardest question I had ever had to answer. I sat down next to her and took her small hands in mine.

"Daisy, listen to me very carefully. Sarah’s inability to love you is a flaw in her, not in you. You are a beautiful, smart, wonderful little girl. Being adopted doesn't mean you are less part of a family. It means you were chosen. I chose you the moment I saw you, and I am never, ever going to let anyone make you feel small again."

She threw her arms around me, burying her face in my chest. "I want to live with you, Grandpa. Always."

"And you will, sweetheart. I promise."

The next morning, we checked out of the resort early. I didn't want Daisy spending another day around the toxic energy of her parents. We spent the day exploring the beautiful beaches of Clearwater, Florida, far away from the chaotic commercialism of the theme parks. Daisy collected seashells, chased seagulls, and laughed as the warm gulf waves crashed against her ankles.

But back in our home state, a legal war was being prepared. Sarah's family came from significant wealth, and her father was a prominent real estate mogul with deep political connections. I knew that when we returned on Monday, they would throw everything they had at me to get Daisy back—not because they loved her, but because their pride had been severely damaged.

I called Arthur, my trusted neighbor who was watching my dog.

"Arthur, I need you to do me a favor. Go over to Julian’s house. Check if they have outdoor security cameras. If they do, see if you can get the footage from Friday night showing them leaving the house."

"Already ahead of you, Grant," Arthur replied. "I noticed they have a Ring doorbell. I know the kid across the street who does their lawn care. He has the Wi-Fi password to their outdoor system. We managed to download the footage of them loading up the SUV on Friday night at 10:00 PM. Daisy was left inside, turning off the lights. It’s clear as day."

I smiled. The trap was set.
