Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Boardroom

The executive boardroom of Harrington Industries sat on the eighty-second floor of a sleek glass skyscraper overlooking Central Park. Usually, this room was Blake’s sanctuary—the place where he felt most powerful, most in control. But today, the panoramic view of Manhattan felt like a cage.

Blake sat at the head of the mahogany table, his tie loosened, his eyes dark with exhaustion. He hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw those three little boys. He saw their dark hair. He saw their gray-blue eyes. He saw the way they clung to Emma, and the way David Sterling had held them as if they belonged to him.

"Mr. Harrington?"

The voice of his chief of staff, Marcus, broke through his daze. Marcus was holding a tablet, looking nervous.

"What is it, Marcus?" Blake barked, his voice raw.

"We... we managed to retrieve the old communication logs from five years ago, as you requested," Marcus said, swallowing hard. "The messages that triggered the divorce. The ones from the burner phone registered to Mrs. Harrington’s name."

Blake sat up straight, his chest tightening. "And? Who sent them? Who was the man she was meeting at the hotel?"

Marcus slid the tablet across the table. "Mr. Harrington... there was no man. We tracked the IP addresses and the routing numbers of the messages. They weren't sent to an affair partner. They were sent to a private investigator working for Vanguard Clean Tech—our primary competitor at the time."

Blake’s brow furrowed. "A private investigator? She was selling our secrets?"

"No, sir," Marcus said, his voice barely a whisper. "She was buying them. She discovered that Vanguard was planning to steal her patented eco-turbine design. She was arranging a meeting at the hotel to confront their lead engineer and threaten them with a lawsuit before they could file the patent. The messages about 'keeping it quiet' and 'not letting Blake find out' were because she wanted to handle it herself to protect your company’s public stock launch."

Blake felt the air leave his lungs.

He stared at the tablet. The unedited transcripts lay before him.

“I have the proof of their design theft,” Emma’s message read. “We meet at the Plaza at 8:00 PM. Do not let Blake know. He is under too much stress with the IPO, and if he panics, the market will react. I will handle this legally.”

It had never been an affair.

She had been trying to save his empire. She had been protecting him.

"My god," Blake whispered, his hands beginning to shake. "I... I threw her out. I called her a whore. I told her she was dead to me."

"There's more, sir," Marcus said, his face pale. "We also investigated the phone records from the clinic she visited after the divorce. The seventeen phone calls she made to your office... they were intercepted."

"Intercepted? By whom?" Blake roared, slamming his fist onto the table.

"By your mother, Clara Harrington," Marcus said, looking down at his shoes. "She instructed your assistant to block Mrs. Harrington’s number and delete all call logs. She told the staff that Emma was attempting to blackmail the family with a 'fabricated pregnancy' to secure a larger divorce settlement."

Blake stood up so fast his chair flipped backward, crashing against the glass wall.

"My mother," Blake gasped, his voice trembling with a mixture of horror and homicidal rage. "She... she knew. She knew Emma was pregnant."

"We found an email exchange between your mother and the family attorneys from that week," Marcus confirmed. "Mrs. Clara Harrington explicitly stated that a child from 'a middle-class scientist with no pedigree' would complicate the inheritance structures of the Harrington estate. She wanted the divorce finalized before any pregnancy could be legally declared."

Blake gripped the edge of the table, his knuckles turning white. The world he had built, the empire he had believed was his alone, was actually built on a foundation of grotesque deceit. His own mother had stolen his children from him. She had turned him into a monster who had abandoned his pregnant wife in her hour of greatest need.

"Get my car," Blake whispered, his voice dangerously quiet. "Now."

May you like

"Where are we going, sir?" Marcus asked.

"To see my mother," Blake said, his eyes turning to cold stone. "And then... we are going to Chicago."
