Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Estate

The Harrington family estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, was a sprawling fortress of brick, ivy, and old money. Clara Harrington sat in the solarium, sipping tea from a delicate porcelain cup, looking every bit the grand matriarch she believed herself to be.
When the heavy oak doors of the solarium were thrown open, she didn't even look up.
"Blake, darling," Clara said smoothly, her voice laced with maternal condescension. "You really must learn not to slam doors. It’s so unrefined."
"You took them from me," Blake said, his voice vibrating with a rage so intense that the porcelain cup in Clara’s hand rattled against its saucer.
Clara paused, her eyes narrowing as she looked at her son. "I have no idea what you are talking about."
"My sons, Mother!" Blake roared, walking over and slamming his hands onto the glass table, shattering a crystal vase of lilies. Water and petals spilled across the expensive rug. "Julian. Leo. Arthur. My children! Emma’s children!"
Clara’s face went stiff, her aristocratic composure slipping for a fraction of a second before she recovered. "Ah. So she finally crawled out of her hole, did she? I assume she’s demanding money now? Typical. I told you five years ago, Blake, she was nothing but a social climber."
"She didn't want a single penny!" Blake screamed. "She never cashed the checks! She raised my sons without a dollar of Harrington money! And you... you knew she was pregnant. You blocked her calls. You threatened her with a restraining order!"
"I did what was necessary to protect this family!" Clara hissed, standing up to face him, her eyes cold and merciless. "Look at you! You were the most eligible bachelor in New York, and you married a girl who spent her weekends in muddy fields testing soil samples! She was a nobody, Blake! And when she got pregnant, she would have used those children to bind you to her forever. I saved you from a lifetime of mediocrity!"
"You saved me?" Blake laughed, a bitter, broken sound that echoed off the high glass ceiling. "You turned me into a father who abandoned his own flesh and blood. You made me hate the only woman I ever truly loved. You didn't protect me, Mother. You destroyed me."
"They are just children, Blake," Clara sneered, waving her hand dismissively. "You can have others. With a woman of your own standing. Someone from a family that actually matters."
"They are my sons," Blake said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly quiet whisper. "And as of this moment, you no longer have a son."
Clara laughed mockingly. "Don't be dramatic, Blake. You need me. You need my connections, my board seats—"
"I don't need anything from you," Blake interrupted. "As CEO of Harrington Industries, I am exercising my right under the corporate bylaws to buy out your shares at current market value. By tomorrow morning, you will be stripped of your board seat. Your security clearance to the penthouse is revoked. And if you ever attempt to contact me, or Emma, or my sons... I will release the email records of your conspiracy to the press. I will make sure the name Clara Harrington is synonymous with child abandonment and corporate fraud."
Clara’s face drained of color. She slumped back into her chair, looking older, smaller, and suddenly very fragile. "Blake... you wouldn't. I am your mother."

"My mother died five years ago when she stole my family," Blake said.
He turned and walked out of the solarium, leaving the grand matriarch alone in her ruined sanctuary, surrounded by spilled water and dead lilies.
