Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Lie

Blake swallowed hard, his eyes scanning the laboratory. He saw the complex schematics on the digital whiteboards—the technology that had made Sterling Aerospace a leader in clean transit. It was her work. She had done all of this without him.
"I know about the messages, Emma," Blake said, his voice cracking. "I know about Vanguard Clean Tech. I know you were trying to protect my company. I know you were trying to protect me."
Emma didn't answer. She simply watched him, her expression unreadable.
"And I know about my mother," Blake continued, a tear finally escaping and tracking down his cheek. "I know she blocked your calls. I know she deleted the logs. I know she threatened you. Emma... I swear to you, on my life, I didn't know. If I had known you were pregnant... if I had known you were carrying my children... I would have crawled on my knees through broken glass to find you."
"But you didn't, Blake," Emma said, her voice quiet but devastatingly cold. "You didn't crawl. You didn't even call. You changed the locks on the penthouse the very next morning. You had your lawyers threaten to sue me for corporate espionage if I ever spoke to the press. You believed the worst of me because it was easier than trusting me."
"I was a coward," Blake sobbed, dropping his head into his hands. "I was terrified of losing what we had built. I let my pride and my mother’s poison blind me. I have spent five years regretting that night. Every single day, Emma. I looked at your empty chair in the boardroom and felt like a part of my soul had been ripped out."
"You don't get to talk about your soul, Blake," Emma said, her voice finally rising with a touch of anger. "Not after what you did to mine. I was twenty-four years old, pregnant with twins, and completely alone in a city where your family controlled everything. Do you have any idea what that felt like? Do you have any idea how many nights I spent staring at the ceiling, wondering how I was going to buy baby formula?"
"I want to make it right," Blake pleaded, taking a step forward, his hands outstretched. "I want to give them everything, Emma. Harrington Industries... it’s theirs. I’ll sign over fifty percent of my shares to a trust for Julian, Leo, and Arthur today. I want to be their father. Please. Just let me see them. Let me talk to them."
"They have a father, Blake," Emma said, her words hitting him like a physical blow. "His name was Thomas Sterling. He was there when they took their first steps. He was there when they had their first fevers. He is the man they call 'Daddy' when they look at the photo on the mantle."
Blake’s chest heaved. The pain of hearing that another man had lived the life that should have been his was almost too much to bear. "But... but Thomas is gone, Emma. I’m still here. I’m their biological father. They carry my blood."
"Blood doesn't make a father, Blake. Love does," Emma said. She walked over to her desk, picked up a document, and handed it to him.
It was a legal petition for visitation rights.
"I knew you would come," Emma said. "My lawyers prepared this. If you want to see them, you will do it legally. You will undergo supervised visits, once a month, under the supervision of a court-appointed child psychologist. You will not tell them you are their father. You will be introduced as 'Mr. Harrington,' a business associate. If, after a year, the psychologist believes they are ready... we will discuss further steps."
Blake stared at the document. Monthly supervised visits. Being introduced to his own sons as a stranger. It was a humiliating, agonizing compromise for a man of his stature.
"And if I refuse?" Blake whispered. "If I fight this in court?"
"Then I will release the complete files of your mother's conspiracy, your company's illegal surveillance of my phone, and the truth behind our divorce to the federal courts and the media," Emma said, her eyes flashing with a cold, unbreakable resolve. "I will destroy your reputation, Blake. I will drag Harrington Industries through the mud until your stock value is zero. I have the Sterling family behind me now. You cannot win this war."

Blake looked at her, seeing the brilliant, terrifyingly strong woman she had become. He realized, with absolute certainty, that she was right. He had no power here.
"I'll sign it," Blake whispered, reaching for a pen. "I’ll sign whatever you want, Emma. Just... please. Let me be in their lives. Even if it's as a stranger. Just let me watch them grow."
