Chapter 2 - The Unraveling

"Collect what belongs to you?!" Chloe screamed, dropping her expensive bouquet of white orchids onto the marble floor. "You're just mad because Ethan chose me! Because I fit his life and you're just a fat, pathetic disgrace who couldn't keep her man!"

The cruelty in Chloe's voice wasn't a surprise to me, but to the three hundred guests—many of whom were high-society colleagues, investors, and local press—it was a sudden, ugly peek behind the curtain of the "sweet, innocent" younger sister.

"Chloe, shut up!" Ethan hissed, grabbing her arm so hard her lace sleeve bunched up.

"Don't touch her!" my father shouted from the front row, finally standing up, looking confused and humiliated. "Ethan, what is going on here? You told me you paid for this entire wedding with your annual performance bonus!"

"He lied to you, Mr. Sterling," Alexander interjected calmly, pulling a slim black tablet from his jacket pocket. "Ethan didn't have a performance bonus. In fact, over the last six months, his firm has been operating at a massive loss. He used Olivia's personal savings—over $150,000 from her late grandmother’s trust—to keep his firm afloat, while using embezzled Vance Global funds to secure this venue and buy your younger daughter that three-carat diamond ring."

The church descended into absolute bedlam.

"My savings?" I asked, looking directly at Ethan.

Five days ago, when he dumped me, he told me the money in our joint investment account was "tied up in illiquid assets." I had trusted him because he was my fiancé, a professional financial manager.

"Liv, please," Ethan begged, stepping down from the altar, ignoring Chloe completely as he held his hands out toward me. "Let's talk about this outside. I made a mistake! I was overwhelmed! Chloe pushed me... she told me she was pregnant!"

Chloe froze. "Ethan! Shut your mouth!"

My mother’s jaw dropped. "Pregnant?!"

Alexander let out a dry, humorless laugh. "A remarkably unoriginal lie, Miss Sterling. Especially considering Vance Global’s executive health records show you visited our corporate health clinic three days ago requesting a routine prescription renewal—with zero indications of pregnancy."

Chloe’s face turned from pale white to a deep, burning crimson. The entire guest list watched as her grand illusion crumbled into dust in a matter of minutes.

"You checked my medical records?!" Chloe shrieked at Alexander.

"You are an employee of Vance Global’s marketing department, Miss Sterling," Alexander reminded her coolly. "Or rather, you were, until your termination was processed thirty minutes ago for corporate policy violations and fraudulent misrepresentation."

Ethan looked around the chapel. His high-profile clients were already getting up from their pews, pulling out their phones, frantically calling their legal teams. The press photographers who had been hired to cover the "High Society Wedding of the Season" were snapping photos continuously, flashbulbs blinding the altar.

"You ruined me," Ethan whispered, glaring at me with raw hatred. "You brought him here to destroy my life!"

I walked up to him, stopping just two feet away. In my heels, wearing the dress he said would make me look ridiculous, I looked down at him.

"You destroyed your own life, Ethan," I said softly, so only he could hear. "You thought I was too weak to fight back. You thought I would hide in my apartment and cry while you lived on my stolen money. You forgot who built your company's brand in the first place."

I turned my back on him and looked at Alexander.

May you like

"Shall we go?" I asked.

Alexander offered me his arm, a genuine, warm smile touching his lips. "With pleasure, Olivia."
