Chapter 2 - The Photograph That Broke the Empire

The photograph in Julian’s hands wasn't a family portrait. It was a high-resolution, time-stamped printout from an offshore financial ledger, paired with a corporate registration document bearing Julian’s signature—and a signature that definitely did not belong to his firm’s senior partners.

"What... what is this?" Victoria whispered, leaning over to look at the paper. Her expression shifted from bewildered annoyance to icy shock as she read the bold header at the top of the document: VANCE HOLDINGS LLC – OFFSHORE ASSET EVASION & EMBEZZLEMENT.

Julian’s knees buckled slightly. He grabbed the edge of the sweetheart table to steady himself, the microphone slipping from his fingers and clattering loudly onto the polished wood floor.

"Cut the music!" Julian screamed toward the DJ booth, his voice cracking into a panicked shriek. "Cut the damn music right now!"

The upbeat jazz track died instantly, leaving only the deafening hum of the room’s collective shock.

Evelyn stopped walking toward her son. She stood frozen a few feet away, her mind racing. She had known Julian was slippery, that he hid money to avoid paying child support, but this... this looked like federal-level fraud.

"You thought you were so smart, Dad," Noah said, his voice echoing in the dead silence. He walked backward toward Evelyn, his small frame radiating a cold, terrifying composure. "You thought because you gave us the cheap apartment and skipped out on my birthday, you were winning. But you left your office laptop open on the kitchen island the night you packed your bags. Remember? Back when you were still pretending to be a good father for ten minutes a week."

Julian lunged forward, his face purple with rage, ignoring the two hundred witnesses. He reached out to grab Noah by the arm—

"Don't touch him."

A deep, commanding voice boomed from the back of the ballroom.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit—a man Evelyn recognized immediately as Arthur Sterling, senior partner of the firm Julian had spent the last five years trying to partner with—stepped out from the shadows near the entrance.

"Julian," Arthur said, his voice dangerously quiet as he walked down the center aisle. "Care to explain why my firm’s compliance audit number is stamped across the bottom of your son's birthday present?"
