Chapter 5 - The Aftermath at MidnightBy midnight, the country club ballroom was entirely empty. The white roses were wilting under the harsh overhead work lights, and the catering staff was busy packing up untouched trays of miniature Wellingtons and champagne flutes.

Evelyn and Noah walked out into the cool Texas night air, heading toward her modest sedan parked in the far corner of the gravel lot.
The stars were bright, cutting through the smog of the city lights in the distance.
Noah opened the passenger door, climbed inside, and buckled his seatbelt. He looked tired, the adrenaline of the evening finally wearing off, leaving behind the face of a ten-year-old boy again.
Evelyn slid into the driver's seat, started the engine, but didn't put the car in drive immediately. She turned to look at her son in the dim glow of the dashboard lights.
"You know," Evelyn said softly, her voice thick with a mixture of awe and protective fierceness, "you could have told me you had those files."
Noah looked out the window at the grand country club entrance where police cruisers had been parked an hour earlier. "If I told you, Mom, you would have tried to stop me. You would have said it was too risky, or that we should just let him go."
Evelyn swallowed hard. He was right. She would have tried to take the high road, preaching dignity and patience while Julian continued to grind them down into the dirt.
"You’re right," Evelyn admitted, reaching over to ruffle his hair. "I probably would have."
"He thought he could treat us like we didn't matter," Noah said quietly, turning his dark eyes back to his mother. "He thought because he had money and a pretty new wife, he was untouchable. But bullies aren't tough, Mom. They're just cowards who pick on people they think won't fight back."
Evelyn felt a tear slip down her cheek, but she smiled through it. She leaned over and pulled her son into a fierce, suffocating hug.

"You’re stronger than I ever was at your age," she whispered against his hair.
"I learned it from you," Noah mumbled into her shoulder.
