Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Gilded Gates

The silence that followed was louder than the thunder rolling across the valley.

Patrick’s face transitioned from a pale, pasty white to a deep, dangerous crimson. His hands, normally steady, began to twitch at his sides. "Rebecca, you’ve known this family for thirty years. You represented my brother's estate. You cannot seriously stand there and support this... this gold-digger."

"My loyalty is to the law, Patrick," Rebecca Stone replied, pulling a gold-tipped pen and a legal notice from her leather briefcase. "And more importantly, my loyalty was to Andrew. For the last two years, Andrew had been transferring his personal assets out of the Callahan Group. He saw the rot in your ledgers. He saw the illegal offshore accounts you were using to fund your lifestyle."

"Every single brick of this estate was bought with Andrew's private capital. He owned seventy percent of Callahan Group's operating stock. And upon his death, those shares did not revert to you, Patrick. They went to Cynthia." — Rebecca Stone, Esq.

Margaret grabbed the iron railing of the porch, her elegant posture completely collapsing. "No. That’s impossible. Andrew loved us. He would never leave his father with nothing!"

"Andrew loved his wife and his six children," Cynthia said, taking a step onto the dry stone of the porch. The children followed her, their wet shoes leaving dark, muddy footprints on the white Italian marble. "The same children you just threw out into a freezing rain. The same children you called 'not real family.'"

She looked Margaret directly in the eyes.

"Benjamin, Leo, Liam, Chloe, Emma, Sophie," Cynthia said, naming each of her children. "These are the Callahans who own this house. Now, get off my porch."

Patrick looked at the two security guards standing at the edge of the driveway—men he had hired and paid for years. "Well? Don't just stand there! Throw them out!"

The guards looked at each other, then at Rebecca Stone, who was already holding her phone with the screen displaying the direct line to the District Attorney's office. One of the guards, an older man named Frank who had always been kind to Andrew, slowly lowered his hands.

"I’m sorry, Mr. Callahan," Frank said quietly. "But if the deed is in her name... we can't touch her. We don't want to get locked up."

"You're fired!" Patrick screamed, his voice cracking with a desperate, pathetic rage. "Both of you are finished in this town!"

"They don't work for you, Patrick," Cynthia remarked calmly. "Their contracts are paid by the property management firm. Which, as of eight days ago, is owned by me. Frank, please assist Mr. and Mrs. Callahan in packing their personal belongings. They have thirty minutes to clear the master guest wing. Anything left behind will be donated to the county shelter."

Margaret let out a choked, strangled cry. "This is my home! You can't do this to me!"

"You threw my children’s clothes into the mud, Margaret," Cynthia said, her eyes cold. "Thirty minutes. The clock is ticking."
