Chapter 5 - The Secret Attorney’s Gambit

Rebecca Stone’s office was located in a restored brick building in the historic district of the city, miles away from the manicured, artificial lawns of Pine Valley. The walls were lined with old law books, and the air smelled of coffee and old paper.
"They suspended the kids?" Rebecca asked, her eyes narrowing as Cynthia explained the call from Mrs. Gable. "Perfect. They just handed us our first major victory."
"How is that a victory?" Cynthia asked, bouncing a fussy Sophie on her knee.
"It’s tortious interference and breach of contract," Rebecca explained, typing rapidly on her laptop. "And because the school is a registered non-profit that receives state funding, their decision to expel your children based on a private family dispute violates state education codes. I’m filing an emergency injunction this afternoon. Not only will the kids be reinstated by tomorrow morning, but we’re going to sue the school board and Margaret Callahan for defamation."
She turned the screen toward Cynthia.
"This is just the first step," Rebecca said. "But we need to hit Patrick where it hurts. His company is holding an annual shareholders' meeting on Thursday. They think they’re going to announce a new development project in the West Side to save their stock price."
"But I own seventy percent of the stock now," Cynthia noted.
"Exactly," Rebecca smiled, a cold, brilliant expression. "You are going to walk into that meeting, Cynthia. And you are going to fire Patrick Callahan from his own company."
"Can I really do that?"
"By law? Yes. But Patrick will have his security, his board of directors, and his loyalists in that room. It will be a war, Cynthia. Are you ready?"

Cynthia looked down at Sophie, who was now smiling up at her, her tiny hand clutching Cynthia’s finger. She thought of Benjamin’s brave face in the rain, of the twins’ confusion, of Andrew’s silent struggle to protect them before his life was cut short.
"I’ve been quiet for fourteen years, Rebecca," Cynthia said, her voice dropping into a steady, unyielding tone. "I am done being quiet."
