Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The next morning, Pine Valley was buzzing with a quiet, venomous energy.

Cynthia walked down the grand staircase to find Benjamin standing by the kitchen island, his eyes glued to his tablet. The other children were eating pancakes that old Frank had helped prepare, their laughter filling the high-ceilinged kitchen for the first time since Andrew's funeral.

"Mom," Benjamin said, his voice tense. "You need to see this."

He handed her the tablet. It was the Pine Valley Community Page—a private forum frequented by the wealthy residents of the neighborhood.

Below the post were dozens of comments.

“Absolutely horrific! We always knew she was after his money.”

“Someone should call Child Protective Services. Those poor children being used as pawns!”

“We need to stand with Patrick and Margaret. Let’s organize a boycott of her business.”

Cynthia felt a cold sensation in her stomach. Before she could speak, the landline on the counter began to ring. She picked it up.

"Cynthia Wells?" a sharp, nasal voice asked. It was Mrs. Gable, the headmistress of the Pine Valley Academy, where the twins and Chloe were enrolled.

"Yes, Mrs. Gable," Cynthia said, keeping her voice level.

"I am calling to inform you that the board has decided to suspend your children's enrollment, effective immediately," Mrs. Gable said cold-heartedly. "The Callahan family has been our primary donor for a decade. We cannot have the school’s reputation dragged down by your ongoing... family disputes."

"My children have done nothing wrong, Mrs. Gable," Cynthia said, her grip on the phone tightening until her knuckles turned white. "And their tuition is paid in full for the entire year. By me."

"The decision is final, Cynthia. We will mail you the remaining balance. Please do not bring them to campus tomorrow."

The line went dead.

Cynthia slowly put the receiver down. She looked at the twins, who were happily drawing pictures of dragons on the kitchen table, completely unaware that their world was being dismantled by their own grandparents.

"Mom?" Benjamin asked, his eyes wide with worry. "What do we do?"

Cynthia walked over to him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders.

"We don't run, Ben," she said quietly, her voice steeling. "We fight."
