Chapter 1 - The Cathedral Reverb

The echoing laugh of Adrian Vale bounced off the vaulted stone arches of Saint Jude’s Cathedral, crisp, arrogant, and entirely undeniable.
"And if she changes her mind after the wedding?" Lenora’s recorded voice purred through the sound system.
"Then we use the medical proxy paperwork we forged last month," Adrian’s voice answered over the church speakers, cold and calculated. "We put her in the private retreat in Switzerland for 'grief-induced psychosis.' By the time anyone asks questions, Hart Biomedical will be restructured, the patent transfers to Vale Capital will be signed by my hand, and Evelyn won't remember her own name."
A collective, horrific gasp ripped through the four hundred guests sitting in the velvet pews.
Adrian stood frozen on the altar platform, his hand still suspended in the air where he had struck me moments earlier. The arrogant, charming smile that had won over the Seattle business elite evaporated, leaving behind a gray, hollow mask of absolute terror.
Beside him, Lenora Vale’s jeweled hand froze against her mouth. The silver silk of her gown rustled as she bolted upright, her eyes wide with unadulterated fury and panic.
"Turn that off!" Lenora shrieked, her voice screeching across the silent sanctuary. "That is an illegal wiretap! That is a lie! Someone stop this!"
Detective Mara Chen did not turn it off. Instead, four plainclothes officers who had been sitting among the guests stood up simultaneously, unbuttoning their suit jackets to reveal silver shields pinned to their belts and Glock 19 holsters resting against their ribs.
"Adrian Vale," Detective Chen said into the microphone, her voice steady and echoing off the stained-glass windows. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, conspiracy to commit murder, and felony assault."
"Assault?!" Adrian stammered, stepping back, his eyes darting wildly toward the side exits of the cathedral. "She... she provoked me! She embarrassed my family! It was a private domestic dispute!"
"You hit her on live broadcast, Adrian," my sister, Clara, called out from her seat, standing up with tears of pride streaming down her face. "The ceremony is being livestreamed to twelve thousand Hart Biomedical employees and major news outlets."
Adrian turned his head sharply toward the rear balcony. Mounted on the railing was a high-definition broadcast camera, its red recording light blinking steadily.
He had insisted on streaming the wedding to show the world the grand union of Hart Biomedical and Vale Capital. He had wanted a public spectacle of my submission. Instead, twelve thousand people—including the board of directors, SEC investigators, and global press—had just watched him slap his bride and heard his detailed blueprint to drug and institutionalize her.
"Evelyn... baby, please," Adrian stuttered, taking a desperate step toward me, his hands raised in surrender. "Think about this. Think about your father's legacy! We can fix this privately. I love you!"
I looked at the man I had almost handed my life to. I felt no sorrow. I felt no heartbreak. Only the cold, pristine clarity of a woman who had finally stepped out of a trap.
I lifted my chin, blood still trickling down the corner of my split lip onto the lace collar of my dress.
"My father built Hart Biomedical to save lives, Adrian," I said, my voice echoing clearly without the need for a microphone. "You tried to turn it into a slaughterhouse for profit. Detective Chen, take him."
Two officers stepped up onto the altar. Adrian tried to twist away, but one officer grabbed his arm, forced him to his knees on the floral runner, and pulled his wrists behind his back. The sharp click-click of steel handcuffs rang out through the cathedral.
"Evelyn! You bitch!" Lenora screamed, lunging toward the altar steps, her expensive silk dress tangling around her heels. "You think you won?! You have no proof of financial theft! My attorneys will have him out on bail before dinner!"
Detective Chen looked down at Lenora with a cold, professional smile. "Mrs. Vale, don't worry about his bail. Worry about your own. Federal agents are currently serving a search warrant on Vale Capital's headquarters and your residence in Mercer Island."
Lenora’s jaw dropped. The silver silk suddenly looked less like royalty and more like a shroud.

As the officers marched Adrian down the center aisle past four hundred stunned, silent guests, I reached down, picked up the train of my gown, and stepped off the altar. I didn't hide my face. I didn't cover my bleeding lip.
I walked down the aisle with my head held high, leaving the broken diamond ring and the fraudulent vows behind me on the Bible.
