Chapter 5 - The Ghost of 1996

The thunderstorm outside matched the storm inside my mind as Julian Vance sat across from me in my office, staring at the scanned 1996 document on my monitor.

His usual calm, unflappable expression had vanished, replaced by an pale, grave dread.

"Is it legitimate, Julian?" I asked, leaning over the desk, my knuckles white. "Did my father really sign this?"

Julian took off his reading glasses and rubbed his eyes tiredly. "I ran the digital forensic signature analysis twenty minutes ago, Evelyn. The signature is Thomas's. It's genuine."

"Why didn't he tell me?!" I cried out, frustration spilling over. "He knew I was going to inherit this company! He knew Adrian was courting me! Why wouldn't he warn me about a thirty-year reversion clause?!"

"Because Thomas thought Richard Vale was dead," Julian said quietly, looking up at me. "Richard Vale was Lenora’s father-in-law. In 1998, two years after they started the lab, Richard was involved in a mysterious boating accident off the coast of Vancouver Island. His body was never recovered. Thomas assumed the partnership was dissolved under standard corporate death clauses."

"Except Richard wasn't legally declared dead until ten years later," I realized, the horrifying puzzle pieces clicking into place. "Which means the partnership agreement remained legally active in the background!"

"Precisely," Julian sighed. "And Lenora spent twenty years quietly buying up Richard's residual estate rights through offshore trusts. She didn't just send Adrian to marry you for money, Evelyn. She sent him to execute a legal trojan horse. If the wedding had happened, the patent ownership would have merged seamlessly under Vale Capital. Now that the wedding failed, they are triggering the thirty-year reversion clause directly."

"If they claim ownership of the core oncology patent," I whispered, horror mounting in my chest, "Hart Biomedical loses seventy percent of its valuation overnight. The Phase Three trials stop immediately. The company goes bankrupt."

"In seventy-two hours," Julian confirmed bitterly.

"Where is the original physical document?" I asked, my mind racing through every security protocol my father had ever established. "A digital scan isn't enough to execute an emergency patent seizure in federal court. They need the physical contract with the original wet-ink signatures."

Julian stilled. He looked at me, a sharp glint returning to his eyes. "The original contract would have been stored in Thomas's primary safety deposit vault at the First Federal Bank of Seattle."

"The vault that required dual key authentication," I murmured, standing up. "My father held one key. Who held the second?"

"His personal secretary of twenty-five years," Julian said, his eyes widening. "Martha Gable."

"Martha retired three months after my father died," I said, grabbing my coat from the rack. "And her exit pension was funded by a shell company registered in Mercer Island... Lenora's hometown."
