Chapter 2 - The Command Center

Thirty minutes after the cathedral erupted into chaos, I was sitting in the back office of a private security firm three blocks away, holding an ice pack against my swollen cheek.

The lace gown was gone, replaced by a sharp black wool trousersuit, my hair pulled back into a tight, practical chignon. Clara sat beside me, wrapping a warm mug of chamomile tea into my hands.

"The livestream views just crossed three million," Clara said, staring at her tablet screen in utter awe. "Every major news network from Seattle to New York is running the clip. 'The Cathedral Confession' is trending globally."

Standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-slicked streets of downtown Seattle was Julian Vance.

Julian was the chief legal counsel for Hart Biomedical and my father’s most trusted advisor. For six months, while I played the grieving, fragile heiress to fool Adrian and Lenora, Julian had been my silent partner in the shadows, orchestrating the legal net that had just slammed shut.

"The federal prosecutor signed off on the freeze orders ten minutes ago," Julian announced, turning around with a dark, satisfied expression. "Every asset belonging to Vale Capital, Adrian Vale, and Lenora Vale has been locked. They can't pay a retainment fee to a public defender, let alone high-priced corporate defense attorneys."

"What about the board?" I asked, setting the ice pack down on the mahogany table. "Adrian claimed he had secured three proxy votes from the senior directors to force my removal as CEO on Monday."

Julian let out a short, dry laugh. "Director Miller called me four times while you were changing clothes. He was practically weeping on the phone, swearing he had no idea Adrian was planning to steal the cancer research patents. The board is terrified, Evelyn. They are calling an emergency session tonight to officially reinstate your absolute voting authority."

I leaned back in the leather chair, letting out a long, heavy breath.

For six grueling months, I had carried the weight of my father’s sudden death, the grief of losing him, and the terrifying realization that the man courting me was a predator attempting to devour his life's work. I had endured Adrian’s subtle condescension, Lenora’s cruel comments about my appearance and intelligence, and the agonizing pretense of playing the dutiful fiancée.

"Is the research safe, Julian?" I asked softly. "Phase Three of the oncology trial... did they touch the server logs?"

"No," Julian replied warmly, walking over and placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Your father’s encrypted server in the Zurich facility remained untouched. The backup files you hid inside the company's legacy code worked flawlessly. The Vale family thought they were downloading the synthetic compound formulas, but they were actually downloading encrypted honeypot files that logged every single IP address and access attempt."

A soft knock sounded on the office door. Detective Chen stepped inside, carrying a thick yellow folder.

"The magistrate just denied bail for Adrian Vale," Mara said, leaning against the doorframe. "Given the flight risk, the threat to a primary witness, and the severity of the federal wire fraud charges, he’s staying in King County Jail until trial."

"And Lenora?" I inquired.

"She was picked up at the airport forty-five minutes ago trying to board a private charter to the Cayman Islands," Mara smirked. "She had two million dollars in unregistered bearer bonds stuffed inside her carry-on luggage. She's currently sitting in an interrogation room demanding her hair stylist."

Clara burst out laughing. "God, I wish I could see her face right now."

I didn't laugh. I knew monsters like Lenora and Adrian didn't die quietly. They were cornered animals, and cornered animals fought with poison when teeth no longer worked.

"They still have allies on the biomedical ethics board," I noted, looking at Julian. "If they try to claim my father's research was stolen from an earlier venture of Vale Capital, they could freeze our clinical trials through an injunction."

"Let them try," Julian said, his dark eyes hardening into cold steel. "Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, we hold a global press conference at Hart Biomedical headquarters. You step into the light, Evelyn. You show them who runs this company."
