Chapter 5 - Desperation at the Gates

Three weeks passed.

The news of the Whitmore family drama had evolved from a shocking scandal into an established legend in high-society circles. Evelyn was praised nationwide as a symbol of strength—a woman who reclaimed her dignity and asserted her rightful place at the helm of her family's empire.

Meanwhile, Daniel Vance’s life was living hell.

Evicted from his luxury life, stripped of all credit, and blacklisted by every executive search firm in the country, Daniel was forced to rent a tiny, dingy studio apartment in the worst neighborhood of the city. He spent his days dodging collection calls and trying to sell off his remaining branded shoes and suits just to afford groceries.

Vanessa, who was released on bail paid for by her furious parents, had completely abandoned him. She had filed a restraining order against him, claiming in a public interview that Daniel had manipulated her and lied about his fortune.

Sitting in his dark, cramped room littered with cheap takeout containers, Daniel stared at a magazine cover featuring Evelyn holding baby Victoria at a high-society charity gala. She looked stunning, wearing a blue sapphire necklace that cost more than Daniel had ever earned.

Jealousy and rage burned through his chest.

"It’s not fair," he growled to himself, his voice raspy. "I spent six years with her! I built that image! I deserve a piece of that empire!"

Driven by sheer desperation, Daniel put on his last clean jacket and headed toward the Whitmore Global headquarters.

He didn't try the front door this time. He waited near the underground executive parking garage entrance, hiding behind a concrete pillar in the dark. He knew Evelyn’s schedule from the magazine article: she was attending an afternoon board meeting at 3:00 PM.

At 2:45 PM, a sleek armored Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled slowly down the ramp into the underground garage.

As soon as the car stopped near the private elevator, Daniel bolted out from behind the pillar.

"Evelyn!" he screamed, throwing himself onto the hood of the car. "Evelyn! Talk to me!"

Before the driver could even react, four heavy executive protection officers slammed Daniel off the hood and pinned him against the cold concrete floor, kneeling on his back.

"Argh! Get off me!" Daniel yelled, his cheek pressed against the oil-stained pavement. "Evelyn! I know you're in there! Look at me!"

The rear door of the Rolls-Royce opened softly.

Evelyn stepped out, holding tiny Victoria safely wrapped in a cashmere blanket against her chest. Charles Whitmore stepped out right behind her, his silver cane clicking against the concrete floor.

Evelyn walked slowly toward Daniel, stopping a few feet away while security held him firmly on the ground.

"You really never learn, do you, Daniel?" Evelyn said, her voice dropping with disappointment.

"Evelyn, please!" Daniel cried out, tears mixing with the dirt on his face. "Look at me! Look at what your father did to me! I'm living in a rat hole! I don't have enough money for food! You can't be this cruel! We were married!"

"You left me when I was in labor, Daniel," Evelyn replied, her eyes cold as winter. "You told me to 'call a nurse.' You told me women have babies every day while your mistress laughed at me."

"I was stupid! I was wrong!" Daniel sobbed. "Give me a second chance! Let me be a father to Victoria! I can change!"

Charles Whitmore stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on his daughter's shoulder before looking down at Daniel.

"You aren't here because you miss my daughter, Daniel," Charles said with absolute authority. "You aren't here because you love this baby. You are here because you miss the money. You miss the prestige. You miss the parasite life you built on my daughter's generosity."

Charles reached into his inner pocket, pulled out a crisp, single five-dollar bill, and tossed it onto the concrete next to Daniel’s face.

"That is the exact value of your character," Charles said. "If you ever approach my family again, the protection team won't hold you for the police. They will deliver you directly to the federal marshal waiting to enforce your restraining order."

Evelyn turned away without saying another word, gently rocking baby Victoria as they walked toward the private executive elevator.

"Evelyn! Evelyn!" Daniel screamed until his voice cracked, but the elevator doors slid shut, sealing him in the darkness of his own ruin.
