Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s True Colors

While Daniel was sinking to the bottom of society, Vanessa was facing her own reckoning.
In her upscale apartment—which was now under eviction notice due to Daniel’s bounced checks—Vanessa was frantically packing her designer handbags into suitcases. Her plan was simple: fly to Europe and find another wealthy target before her reputation was completely ruined.
Suddenly, her door was knocked open with a loud thud.
Three officers from the State Financial Crimes Unit stepped inside, accompanied by Arthur Vance and a court clerk.
"Vanessa Lane?" the lead detective asked, showing a badge. "We have a warrant for your arrest and an immediate seizure order for all personal property purchased with funds originating from Whitmore Capital trusts."
Vanessa backed away, dropping her suitcase. "What?! You already took the earrings! I don't have anything else!"
Arthur Vance stepped forward, smiling thinly as he referenced his legal binder.
"Miss Lane, financial forensic audits reveal that over the last eighteen months, Mr. Daniel Vance transferred approximately $3.2 million directly from the trust accounts to your personal accounts. You used these funds to buy designer clothes, sports cars, lease this apartment, and pay off your personal credit card debts."
"He gave that to me as gifts!" Vanessa shrieked. "I didn't know where the money came from!"
"Ignorance of grand larceny and receiving embezzled corporate property is not a legal defense," Arthur noted calmly. "Furthermore, wire transfer logs prove you actively requested these transfers while knowing Mr. Vance was managing trust capital."
Two officers stepped forward, pulling her hands behind her back and clicking handcuffs around her wrists.
"You can't do this! Do you know who I am?!" Vanessa screamed, kicking her legs as she was dragged down the hallway of her luxury building.
Neighbors peeked out from their apartments, filming the entire arrest on their smartphones. By evening, videos of Vanessa’s tearful, messy arrest were trending #1 across social media platforms.
In jail, stripped of her makeup, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, Vanessa was led to the visitation room. She expected her high-priced defense attorney. Instead, sitting behind the glass window was Daniel.
He looked terrible—unkempt hair, dirty clothes, hollow cheeks.
Vanessa picked up the receiver and slammed it against her ear, her face contorted with hatred. "You! You bastard! You ruined my life! They arrested me because of your illegal money transfers!"
Daniel picked up his phone, laughing bitterly. "My life is ruined too, Vanessa! I came here to ask if you had any cash left from the transfers so I could pay my rent!"
"Are you insane?!" Vanessa screamed through the glass. "I hate you! I wish I had never met you! You were nothing but a weak, desperate fraud who pretended to be a billionaire! Evelyn was right about you—you are a pathetic worm!"
"I gave you everything!" Daniel yelled back, banging his fist against the glass screen. "I left my pregnant wife for you!"
"And that proves how stupid you are!" Vanessa spat, her voice dripping with venom. "A man who abandons his pregnant wife for a fling is a fool who deserves to lose everything. Don't ever look at me again!"

Vanessa hung up the phone and slammed it down, walking away with the prison guard.
Daniel sat alone in the booth, listening to the dial tone. The woman he had traded his family, his fortune, and his soul for had just torn him to pieces. He buried his face in his hands and wept bitter, helpless tears.
