Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Prison Walls

Two years later.
Inside the high-security state correctional facility, life was brutal and unforgiving.
Daniel Vance sat in the crowded, noisy prison cafeteria, dressed in a faded yellow jumpsuit. His hair was thin and greying, his hands rough and calloused from mandatory prison labor details. The man who once complained if his espresso wasn't served at the exact right temperature now ate bland porridge off a plastic tray.
He had no visitors. No mail. No money in his commissary account.
"Hey, fresh meat," a large, tattooed inmate slammed his tray down across from Daniel. "You're that guy who used to be married to the billionaire's daughter, right?"
Daniel kept his head down, clutching his plastic spoon. "I don't want any trouble."
The inmate laughed loudly. "Trouble? Nah. We just saw the TV in the recreation room. Your ex-wife just made the cover of Forbes magazine. Thought you'd like to hear how well she's doing without you."
Daniel’s hands trembled. He couldn't stop himself from looking up. "What... what did it say?"
"She was named global CEO of Whitmore Enterprises," the inmate smirked. "She just launched a ten-billion-dollar green energy initiative. And her little girl—your daughter—just had a huge birthday party featured on the news. The granddad built her a whole private theme park."
The inmate shook his head, laughing as he walked away. "Man, you had the golden ticket to the universe, and you threw it in the trash for some side chick. You must be the dumbest guy on planet Earth."
Daniel sat frozen at the table as the lunch bell rang.
That night, lying on the thin mattress of his damp concrete cell, Daniel listened to the distant echoing sounds of prison doors slamming and heavy boots pacing the hallways.
He stared at the blank grey ceiling, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks.
Memory after memory flooded his mind: Evelyn waiting for him with dinner when he came home late from work... Evelyn smiling as she picked out baby clothes... Evelyn begging him on her knees in the rain: "Please don't go tonight..."
And his own arrogant, merciless response: "Call a nurse."
"What did I do?" Daniel wept softly into his thin pillow, his voice breaking in the dark. "My God... what did I do?"

He had traded a life of infinite love, immense wealth, royalty, and a beautiful family for a fleeting moment of hollow vanity. Now, he had nothing. He would rot in this tiny box for years, and when he finally stepped out, he would still be a ghost in a world that had moved on without him.
His repentance had come, but it came in the absolute dark—too late, too meaningless, and forever powerless to undo his fate.
