Chapter 2 - The Gathering Storm

Three days later, I was discharged from the hospital. Dr. Brooks—Daniel, as he had insisted I call him during his daily visits—personally escorted us to the lobby. Rachel had brought her spacious SUV, packing it with the mountain of gifts and flowers that had arrived from my friends, colleagues, and, ironically, several partners at Michael's firm who had no idea what had transpired.

Before we left, Daniel handed me his personal business card.

"If you need anything, Catherine—and I mean absolutely anything, whether it's medical or just a voice to listen—call this number," he said, his gaze steady and warm. "You're a very strong woman, but you don't have to carry the weight of the world entirely on your own."

"Thank you, Daniel," I said, my heart fluttering slightly at the sincerity in his eyes. "You have no idea how much your kindness has kept me grounded."

"Get some rest," he said, leaning down to gently touch Lily's tiny hand, which immediately wrapped around his index finger. A soft, genuine smile broke across his handsome face, and my breath hitched. For a second, they looked like...

I shook the thought away. I was a newly single mother, fresh out of a traumatizing betrayal. Romance was the furthest thing from my mind.

We drove straight to Rachel's suburban home in Cherry Hill, just across the river from Philadelphia. I had absolutely no intention of returning to the penthouse downtown that Michael and I shared. It was a golden cage, paid for with his family’s money, and it was likely polluted by Amber’s presence.

The next morning, the war officially began.

Rachel had arranged for a meeting with Marcus Vance, the most ruthless divorce attorney in the state of Pennsylvania. Marcus was a sharp, fifty-something man with silver hair and eyes like a hawk. He sat across from me in Rachel’s sunlit dining room, reviewing the stack of financial documents Rachel had managed to download from our joint accounts before Michael could block my access.

"Well, Catherine," Marcus said, tapping his gold pen against the table. "Your husband has been very sloppy. It seems he’s been using company funds to pay for Amber Collins's luxury apartment in Rittenhouse Square, as well as several 'business trips' to Aspen and Miami that occurred while you were pregnant. This is a classic case of dissipation of marital assets."

"Can we use this to get sole custody of Lily?" I asked, my voice tight. That was my only priority. I didn't care about the penthouse, the cars, or the country club memberships. I wanted my daughter safe from Michael's toxic influence.

"Absolutely," Marcus replied with a cold, satisfied smile. "Between the abandonment during active labor, the emotional abuse captured in the phone call—which your sister luckily noted the exact timestamp of so we can subpoena the carrier records—and his financial infidelity, we have enough ammunition to bury him. But Michael’s family is incredibly wealthy, Catherine. They will fight. His mother, Eleanor Harrison, is a formidable woman who values the family name above all else. She will try to buy you off, or worse, destroy your reputation to protect her son."

"Let her try," I said, my eyes hardening. "They've taken my peace, Marcus. They won't take my daughter."

Just as Marcus left, the front doorbell rang. Rachel went to answer it, and within seconds, I heard raised voices from the foyer.

"You have no right to keep me from my wife and child!" Michael’s voice boomed, sending a jolt of adrenaline through my veins.

"She is not your wife anymore, you pathetic excuse for a man!" Rachel yelled back. "Get off my porch before I call the police!"

I stood up from the dining table, smoothing down my sweater. I felt a momentary wave of panic, but then I looked at the baby monitor on the counter. Lily was sleeping peacefully upstairs. I had to be strong.

I walked into the foyer.

Michael stood just inside the doorway, looking disheveled. His expensive Italian suit was wrinkled, his tie was crooked, and his eyes were bloodshot. The charming, polished CFO was nowhere to be seen. Behind him, parked in the driveway, was his sleek black Porsche.

"Catherine!" he gasped when he saw me. He tried to step forward, but Rachel blocked him, her arm outstretched like a steel barrier. "Catherine, please. We need to talk. This has gone way too far. I haven't slept in three days. I’ve been going crazy trying to find you."

"You found me," I said, my voice ice-cold. "Now look at me, Michael. Because this is the last time you will ever see me without a lawyer present."

"Babe, please," he pleaded, his hands shaking. "The phone call... it was a misunderstanding. Amber was drunk. She was mad because I wouldn't leave the conference to go to dinner with her. She grabbed my phone to spite me. I swear to you, nothing happened between us! She’s just a bitter employee. I fired her. She's gone!"

I let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Do you really think I'm that stupid? Marcus Vance has already tracked the Rittenhouse apartment you bought for her. He has the receipts for the jewelry, the trips, the dinners. You've been sleeping with your 'executive assistant' for at least two years, Michael. All while I was undergoing IVF to conceive the baby you claimed you wanted."

Michael’s face drained of color. The lies had finally run out, and the stark, ugly truth was laid bare in the light of day.

"Catherine..." his voice dropped to a desperate whisper. "Think about the family. Think about Harrison Enterprises. If this gets out, the stock will plummet. My mother..."

"I don't care about your mother, and I don't care about your company," I said, stepping closer to him, my gaze locking onto his with absolute fury. "You left me to give birth alone in a historic storm. You let your mistress humiliate me while I was screaming in pain. You are a coward, Michael. And I am going to strip you of everything you hold dear."

"You won't get a dime," Michael sneered, his desperate facade finally cracking to reveal the arrogant, spoiled man underneath. "My family has the best lawyers in the country. We will drag this out until you are broke, homeless, and begging for scraps. And I will take Lily just to show you that you can't defy me."

"Get out," a deep, commanding voice suddenly echoed from the open doorway behind Michael.

We all turned. Standing on the porch, holding a large basket of fresh organic fruits and baby supplies, was Daniel. He had his clinical jacket off, wearing a casual dark blue sweater that made him look incredibly imposing. His eyes were fixed on Michael, burning with a quiet, dangerous rage.

"Who the hell are you?" Michael demanded, trying to puff out his chest.

"I'm Catherine’s doctor," Daniel said, stepping into the foyer, his massive frame easily eclipsing Michael's. "And as her physician, I am telling you that your presence is a direct threat to her post-partum recovery. You are trespassing, and if you do not leave in the next five seconds, I will personally throw you off this property and ensure the police are waiting for you at the gate."

Michael looked at Daniel, then at me, and finally at Rachel, who was already holding her phone with the 911 keypad ready.

"This isn't over, Catherine," Michael hissed, pointing a finger at me. "You'll regret this."

He turned and stormed out, slamming the door behind him. The roar of his Porsche's engine faded into the distance.

Inside, the silence was thick. I took a deep, trembling breath, my hands starting to shake.

"Hey," Daniel said softly, setting the basket down on the console table and walking over to me. "He's gone. You're safe."

He reached out, and without thinking, I let myself lean into his strength. His arms wrapped around me, warm and incredibly solid. For a few seconds, I just let myself be held, feeling the steady beat of his heart against my cheek. I was in the middle of a war, but in his arms, I felt an inexplicable sense of peace.
