Chapter 4 - Unlikely Allies

The drive back from the Harrison estate was a blur. My heart was pounding, and my hands were shaking so violently I had to clench them into fists to keep them still. I had stood up to Eleanor, but I knew the consequences would be severe. The Harrisons were going to unleash a storm of their own, and I needed to be prepared.

When I arrived back at Rachel's house, I was surprised to see a sleek, black luxury sedan parked in the driveway. It wasn't Michael’s Porsche, nor was it Rachel’s SUV.

I walked into the house, my defensive walls immediately going up. Rachel met me in the hallway, her face pale and anxious.

"Catherine, someone is here to see you," she whispered, glancing toward the living room. "I tried to tell her to leave, but she insisted. She said she has something you need."

"Who is it?" I asked, a sense of dread pooling in my stomach.

"See for yourself."

I walked into the living room. Standing by the fireplace, looking incredibly nervous, was Amber Collins.

She was dressed in a simple beige trench coat, her usual heavy makeup stripped away, leaving her looking tired and surprisingly young. Her eyes were red-rimmed, and she held a thick manila envelope tightly against her chest.

"What are you doing here?" I demanded, my voice dangerously low. "You have five seconds to leave this house before I throw you out myself."

"Catherine, please," Amber gasped, taking a step back, her hands shaking. "Just... just listen to me for five minutes. Please. I know you hate me. You have every right to hate me. I was a horrible person to you. But I was lied to. Just like you were."

"I don't care about your excuses, Amber," I spat, the memory of her voice on the phone at 3:07 a.m. flashing through my mind, sending a wave of hot anger through my body. "You told me my labor wasn't Michael’s responsibility. You helped him abandon his daughter."

"Because Michael told me you were faking it!" Amber cried out, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "He told me you weren't even due for another month! He said you were using a 'fake labor scare' to force him to come home and ruin his career-defining conference. He told me you were abusive, that you were trapped in a loveless marriage, and that you were only staying with him for his money."

I stared at her, stunned. Even knowing how manipulative Michael was, the sheer depth of his lies was breathtaking.

"He told me he was divorcing you," Amber continued, her voice cracking. "He promised me we would be together, that we would raise the baby together because you were 'unstable.' But the moment you filed for divorce, he turned on me. He fired me. He blamed me for the entire thing. He told his mother I was a stalker who had forced myself into his hotel room. He’s trying to ruin my life, Catherine. He's blacklisting me from every firm in the city. I can't get a job. My landlord is evicting me because Michael stopped paying the rent on the apartment."

She stepped forward, holding out the thick manila envelope.

"This is everything," Amber said, her voice trembling. "All the texts, the emails, the bank statements. The proof that he used Harrison Enterprises' offshore accounts to buy my silence and fund our relationship. It has his personal signatures, his private email access codes, and recordings of him admitting to hiding millions of dollars in offshore accounts to keep them out of your divorce settlement."

My breath hitched. I looked at the envelope, then at Amber’s desperate, tear-stained face.

"Why are you giving this to me?" I asked quietly.

"Because he ruined me," Amber whispered, a cold, vengeful light appearing in her eyes. "He used me, and then he threw me away like garbage to protect himself and his mother's precious company. I want to see him fall, Catherine. And I know you are the only one who can make it happen."

I slowly reached out and took the envelope. It was heavy, packed with the ammunition I needed to completely destroy Michael Harrison’s defense.

"This doesn't mean I forgive you, Amber," I said, my voice firm. "What you did to me on the night my daughter was born was unforgivable."

"I know," Amber said, bowing her head. "I don't expect you to forgive me. I just want justice. For both of us."

After Amber left, I immediately called Marcus Vance. Within an hour, he was at the house, spreading the documents across the dining table. His eyes were wide with excitement as he scanned the pages.

"This is it, Catherine," Marcus breathed, a triumphant smile spreading across his face. "This is the holy grail. Not only does this guarantee you sole custody and a massive settlement, but this... this is federal tax fraud. Michael hasn't just been hiding money from you; he's been hiding it from the IRS. And Eleanor Harrison’s signature is on several of these corporate authorization forms. If we leak this to the federal prosecutors, Harrison Enterprises is finished."

"Good," I said, a cold, hard satisfaction settling in my chest. "Let them burn."

Later that evening, as I was rocking Lily to sleep in the nursery, my phone rang. It was Daniel.

"Hey," his warm voice washed over me, immediately melting away the tension of the day. "I wanted to check on you. How did the meeting with Eleanor go?"

"It was... intense," I admitted. "She threatened to take Lily and ruin my life. But then, something incredible happened." I proceeded to tell him about Amber’s visit and the documents she had delivered.

There was a long silence on the other end of the line. "Catherine, that's amazing news. But you need to be careful. The Harrisons are like cornered animals right now. When they realize you have this kind of leverage, they might do something desperate."

"I know," I said, looking down at Lily's peaceful face. "But I’m not afraid anymore, Daniel."

"I know you aren't," he said softly. "But I am. Because... I care about you, Catherine. More than a doctor should care about his patient."

My heart did a sudden, violent flip. "Daniel..."

May you like

"I know the timing is terrible," he rushed to say, his voice filled with a rare vulnerability. "You're going through a war, and you need space to heal. I don't expect anything from you right now. But I want you to know... you aren't alone in this. I'm right here. And I'm not going anywhere."

"Thank you, Daniel," I whispered, a warm tear of happiness slipping down my cheek. "That means more to me than you will ever know."
