Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

The next two weeks were a blur of intense legal preparation. Marcus Vance worked around the clock, compiling the evidence Amber had provided into a devastating, ironclad lawsuit. We were suing Michael for divorce, full custody of Lily, and heavy financial damages, while simultaneously preparing a whistle-blower report for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding Harrison Enterprises’ illegal offshore accounts.
Michael and Eleanor, completely unaware of the nuclear bomb we were about to drop on them, continued their aggressive tactics. They filed a countersuit, demanding full custody of Lily and accusing me of being mentally unstable, citing "severe postpartum psychosis" and "hallucinations of marital infidelity." They even hired a corrupt psychologist to write a preliminary assessment without ever having met me.
The media, tipped off by the Harrison PR machine, began to hover around Rachel's house. Reporters from local tabloids camped out at the gates, trying to get photos of me and Lily. It was exhausting and terrifying, but Daniel was there almost every day, using his medical authority to keep them at bay and bringing us groceries and supplies.
Finally, the day of the emergency custody hearing arrived.
The courtroom in the Philadelphia Family Court was tense. Michael sat at the defense table, looking smug and confident in a tailored navy suit. Beside him sat his high-priced corporate attorneys and his mother, Eleanor, who looked at me with a cold, triumphant sneer.
I sat at the plaintiff's table with Marcus, wearing a simple, elegant dark gray dress. Daniel sat in the gallery behind me, his steady presence giving me the strength to keep my chin high.
The judge, a stern-faced woman named Judge Evelyn Thornton, took her bench and banged her gavel.
"We are here to address the temporary custody arrangement for Lily Harrison, pending the final divorce proceedings," Judge Thornton announced. "Mr. Harrison's counsel, you may speak first."
Michael’s lead attorney stood up, straightening his cuffs. "Your Honor, our client is deeply concerned for the safety and well-being of his infant daughter. As detailed in the psychological evaluation we have submitted, Mrs. Harrison is suffering from severe, untreated postpartum depression and delusional paranoia. She has cut off all contact with her husband, refused to allow him to see his daughter, and is currently living in an unstable environment. We request immediate temporary sole custody to ensure the child's safety."
The judge looked at Marcus. "Mr. Vance, how do you respond to these very serious allegations?"
Marcus stood up, his expression completely calm. "Your Honor, the allegations made by the defense are not only completely false, but they are a desperate attempt to cover up a pattern of severe emotional abuse, financial fraud, and active abandonment."
"Do you have proof of these claims, Mr. Vance?" the judge asked, leaning forward.
"We do, Your Honor," Marcus said, his voice echoing through the courtroom. "We have carrier records proving that on the night of June 12th, while Catherine Harrison was in active labor during a severe storm, Michael Harrison was at a luxury hotel with his executive assistant, Amber Collins. We also have a recording of a phone call made at 3:07 a.m. that night, where Ms. Collins, using Mr. Harrison's phone, told Mrs. Harrison that her labor was 'not his responsibility.'"
A murmur ran through the courtroom. Michael’s attorney jumped to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! This is irrelevant to the mother's current mental state!"
"Overruled," Judge Thornton snapped. "I want to hear this."
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Marcus continued, his voice growing stronger, "we have evidence that this was not an isolated incident. We have extensive documentation, provided by Ms. Amber Collins herself, detailing a multi-year affair funded entirely by Harrison Enterprises' corporate accounts. But more importantly, we have evidence of severe financial fraud."
Marcus walked over to the defense table and dropped a thick stack of documents in front of Michael's lawyer.
"These documents contain bank records, wire transfers, and internal corporate emails proving that Michael Harrison, with the direct authorization of Eleanor Harrison, has been funneling millions of dollars of marital assets into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands to hide them from these divorce proceedings. This is not just a divorce case, Your Honor. This is a federal crime."
The courtroom erupted into chaos.
Michael’s face went completely white, his eyes bulging as he stared at the documents in front of him. Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her chest as she realized the sheer scale of the disaster that had just unfolded.
"Order! Order in the court!" Judge Thornton banged her gavel furiously, her face dark with anger.
When the room finally silenced, she looked down at Michael with absolute disgust.
"Mr. Harrison, your actions are abhorrent," Judge Thornton said, her voice shaking with quiet rage. "To abandon your wife during childbirth is a monstrous act of cowardice. To then attempt to use the legal system to steal her child by fabricating a mental illness is a grave abuse of this court."
She turned her gaze to me, her expression softening.
"Mrs. Harrison, temporary sole physical and legal custody of Lily Harrison is hereby granted to you, effective immediately. Mr. Harrison is granted zero visitation rights pending a full psychiatric evaluation of his own. Furthermore, I am ordering a freeze on all assets associated with Harrison Enterprises and referring these financial documents to the United States Attorney’s Office for immediate federal investigation."
She banged her gavel. "Court is adjourned."
I stood up, tears of relief streaming down my face. Marcus hugged me, laughing triumphantly. I looked over at the defense table. Michael was slumped in his chair, his head in his hands, while Eleanor was furiously screaming at their lawyers, her face red with humiliation.

I turned around and looked at the gallery. Daniel was standing there, a brilliant, proud smile on his face. He walked over to me, and before I could say a word, he pulled me into his arms, spinning me around slightly.
"You did it, Catherine," he whispered into my hair. "You did it."
