Chapter 2 - The Toxicology of Treason

Forty-five minutes later, an unmarked black sedan pulled smoothly into the covered courtyard of the estate.

Evelyn Vance stepped out. At fifty-eight, Evelyn was the most feared corporate litigator and forensic prosecutor in the state. She had been my father’s personal attorney for thirty years, the woman who drafted his airtight corporate trusts, and the only person who had openly doubted David’s sudden rise within Solomon Construction after my father’s death.

Beside her was Dr. Marcus Thorne, a renown chief toxicologist from the state medical examiner’s private laboratory.

I brought them directly into the study, locking the heavy mahogany door behind us.

"Show me," Evelyn commanded quietly, setting her briefcase on the desk.

I handed her the laptop displaying the audio files and placed the brown glass bottle of white capsules in front of Dr. Thorne.

For twenty minutes, Dr. Thorne worked silently at the side table, wearing sterile latex gloves. He carefully unscrewed one of the capsules, emptying a tiny portion of the fine white powder into three separate chemical testing vials he had brought in a padded briefcase.

Evelyn listened to the audio recordings through high-fidelity headphones. Her sharp, elegant face grew increasingly pale, her jaw tightening with every passing second.

"It's a high-purity tasteless compound," Dr. Thorne reported, his voice dripping with grim authority as the fluid in his third testing vial turned a dark, murky purple. "Organically synthesized thallium acetate mixed with heavy doses of lithium carbonate. It causes slow, systemic organ shutdown while inducing severe neurological confusion, extreme fatigue, and memory loss."

Dr. Thorne looked up at me, his eyes filled with profound sympathy. "If you had taken these capsules every night as prescribed, Mrs. Solomon, you would have been comatose within twelve days. Dead within three weeks. And standard hospital blood panels would have misdiagnosed it as an acute autoimmune breakdown."

Evelyn removed her headphones, leaning both hands flat on the mahogany desk.

"This is attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit fraud, and corporate extortion," Evelyn stated, her eyes flashing like polished flint. "I can have the State Police arrest David and Maggie at Pinecrest Lake in three hours."

"No," I said instantly, my voice ringing clear through the study.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Adrianna, they are trying to poison you."

"If you arrest them now, their corporate defense lawyers will stall," I reasoned, leaning over the desk. "They will claim the audio card was fabricated, that Whitney planted it, or that David had no idea what was inside the bottle. They’ll file emergency motions to freeze Solomon Construction's assets, and they will drag my seven-year-old traumatized son into a brutal, public custody battle to prove he's an unreliable witness."

I pointed at the laptop screen. "I don't just want David and Maggie in prison, Evelyn. I want to pull up every root of the cancer they planted in my father's company. I want to know who the 'Apex Syndicate' is, and I want to destroy everyone who helped them murder my father."

Evelyn looked at me for a long, quiet moment. A slow, terrifying smile spread across her face—the same smile my father used to describe as a death sentence for corporate raiders.

"You sound just like Thomas," Evelyn whispered softly. "What is your plan?"

"They think I'm at home, taking my first dose tonight," I said coldly. "They think they have three weeks to relax at the lake house while I slowly lose my mind. Let them believe the poison is working."
